things I'm thrilled about in MD2010

Now that I've spent some time with MD2010, there are a few improvements and additions that are making me enjoy Moneydance more than ever:

  • the new "Uncleared" view in the register is really nice. It lets you focus on the recent transactions that are still "in play."
  • we can finally choose an alternative match for mis-matched downloaded transactions.
  • hooray for true capital gains reporting! Finally, MD breaks out short term and long term capital gains. This was a huge source of anxiety for me. This was the last little thing that bugged me and kept me looking at competing products.
  • another hooray for being able to download transactions into all accounts all at once.
  • downloaded transactions now appear in the same layout as manually entered transactions (as a result of their being entered into the register). It always annoyed me in MD2008 that downloaded transactions appeared in their own non-standard format, making them harder to compare to register transactions.
  • you didn't monkey with the awesome simplicity and cleanliness of the home page. I can turn off the sidebar and have my exact same home page, which is how I like it.

Couple this with all the rapid-fire improvements that the developers have been making to downloaded transaction matching, and this product is really top notch. Well done.

It may be my imagination, but MD build 735 seems to open, and close, noticeably faster than previous builds. Running mac OS X 10.4.11 with J2SE5.

I have been using MD since 2004, but didn't really go "full time" until April 2007 (a date which will live infamy...Quicken became the Microsoft of Financial Apps). I haven't looked back. I have been reluctant to try a lot of the new features along the way, I just didn't have time to learn. It worked, so I kept plodding on. I have experienced MD evolving and getting better...until now. It just did a step change.

Wow. I installed MD2010 to a fresh folder, copied in my current files, encrypted them and started downloading using the new interface. Very comfortable!

The side bar is nice, reminiscent of one of Quicken's better features. It's much easier to move from account to account now. The register view hasn't changed (good), except for the Blue Dots, and the range filters are very, very fast and nice. Graphs look better, especially showing price AND volume on Security detail page.

Online interface, although mostly the same, is much smoother and more fluid...no more picking a Payee, then going to the little pay window; it's simply one click, and with stored PW's, very nice! And multiple account download makes the whole process easy. Oh, yeah, it IS faster, too.

So, I am both pleased and relieved with MD '10. Keep it up.

    Some feedback:
Some additional "sub types" under Mutual Funds (in Securities) would help, or at least provide an "edit Security Sub-types" pop-up, similar to category Tags, so we can add our own. It would still be a high value enhancement to link "reminders" to "online payments". I use reminders but, after sending the payment, I have to go back and "skip" the reminder. A huge additional benefit of that will be online pay of a payment with splits...like a mortgage payment. save a LOT of time...for me, anyway.

Now, for the kicker...I would like to "buy" a new license, even though I don't need one. Consider it my way of contributing to MD's future development (I know, one license = about 15 min dev time), and also showing how pleased I am with the new version. So please let me know how I can do that, without mucking up my current license.

Thanks for the slick new version, and please let me know how to contribute.

In MD 2010, you can now edit sub-types for securities. And, the portfolio allocation graph breaks down the "pie" into the sub-types. Very nice new feature.

Be nice if you could also do that for the check# field in a transaction register.

Be nice if you could also specify the level of sub-type, and child, breakdown in all the graphs, and for types of accounts. The allocation graph for instance, does not break down bank or asset types.

    What I really like?

Well, some folks might be put off by the advice at http://help.infinitekind.com/faqs/frequently-asked-questions-2/how-... (i.e., 1) Export your data to an XML file...Edit the exported file in a text editor. Search for the name of your account and you should see a section like this: {{{ B My Account 110</ ACCTID> 8 1020.00 ...) but I really like this - a developer cannot anticipate everything a user would want to do with their data.

By contrast, Quicken owns my Quicken data and I can only partially get at it.
