Just switched (Successfully) from MS Money

Moneydance is a great system. I just switched from MS Money and I am really happy.

I was disappointed that Microsoft discontinued MS Money, and I REALLY did not want to switch to Quicken, after hearing lots of negative comments about Quicken 2010. I really wanted an integrated online bill pay feature. After reading reviews, I decided to try out Moneydance.

I did not import any MS Money data... I had been using it for a long time and had collected a lot of baggage, so I decided to start fresh. So it took me some time, but in about a day I was able to create all my accounts, import transactions from the various banks and investment companies, setup reminders, and so on.

I have to say - I AM VERY PLEASED. I didn't know much about Moneydance, and I had heard so many complaints about other packages, that I expected a lot of problems and headaches. But it was very smooth, and I'm really impressed by how easy you have made the system compared to MS Money. Yeah, there are a few quirks... little things I like about MS Money that are different. But overall, the features I needed are roughly the same, and the system is in many ways easier to understand than Money.

Thanks for a great package!

Tell ya what... ask me in a month, OK? Switching was a good experience, I would like to get through a month of transactions before I am quoted. But barring any serious problems, I'd be OK with it.

    Ben:

Really, just one question. Most of my transactions are downloaded from banks and credit card companies. The category assigned to these is the default category for that account.

Is there an easier way to assign default categories? Ideally, every time I buy from "Dominick's" the category should be "Groceries". I don't see any way to assign categories automatically, like MS Money did.

    Thanks
    Paul

    Paul,
It seems we let your query slip through the cracks and I apologize. Regarding the category matching, it should automatically learn how to do this. In some of the early releases of Moneydance 2010 the matching and learning process was not so clear, I'd recommend trying out the latest build of Moneydance 2010 and see if that matching process works well for you as far as auto-categorization is concerned. Here is the link for it: http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance with this issue or any others.
