Sorry to hear about the problems you've encountered and please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your query, Chris.
Can you check you're running the latest version of the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension? To do this, choose Extensions --> Manage Extensions. The latest version of the extension is v.1024. You should see an 'Update' button if you're using an older version, or remove the extension and re-install.
Can you also check which version and build of Moneydance you are running?
To do this, open Moneydance and select Help --> About Moneydance (or Moneydance --> About Moneydance on a Mac) where the version and build number will be displayed.Moneydance previously obtained rates using Yahoo, but unfortunately they stopped supporting downloads to third party applications in the last year or so. Since then we've been trying to locate other services we can include, but few are free and reliable. We currently use Alphavantage and IEX Trading.
Alphavantage worked well for some time, but recently changed their services and introduced a premium membership. This has limited the number of downloads per minute for free accounts, so you may find the updates are slower.
We've included IEX trading as another source for updating rates. This website includes a list of eligible symbols IEX trading uses - https://iextrading.com/trading/eligible-symbols/Recently, a knowledgeable Moneydance customer and developer (Mike Bray) has created a third party extension called 'Quotes Loader'. This extension doesn't adhere to the same limitations as the program and is able to connect with Yahoo. You can find more information about the extension in this thread(the latest free third-party Quote Loader is post 205) from the public discussion board.
Download the PDF attached to post 205 and have a read.To get an overview take a look at the YouTube video by using the link on page one of the PDF.

I'm a fellow user.
From this exchange I am not sure exactly what your questions relate to.
The blurb on the Quotes and Exchange Rate Extension is out of date it is not using Google or Yahoo at this time for quotes. It has provision for AlphaVantage or IEX for quotes and AlphaVantage or ECB for Exchange rates. It is my understanding that IEX has changed their service and is at least currently not working.
The user written Quote Loader uses Yahoo and Financial Times for its quotes and exchange rate sources.
Generally you use Ticker codes for shares for both tools.
Both extensions work with Moneydance 2019.3. Which to use depends on a number of factors. It can be as simple as which source provides the quotes you need. It can be what combination of features you are looking for.

dwg,
Thanks. Can I ask you to assume that I am computer illiterate (true) and can you tell me in simple steps what you recommend I do to get currency and stock prices.
I have this installed

First no matter what solution you use you have to have the Ticker for each security set.
Use the menu path Tools --> Securities and it brings up the list select one and double click on it and it opens up the Security History Window. Click on the Edit button that is one the same line as the Security name and ensure the correct ticker is set.
You seem to have decided to try the Quotes and Exchange Rate extension. Open the extension through the menu path Extension --> Quotes and Exchange Rates.
Ensure the securities you wanted update are checked. Select the stock exchange that the security is quoted on. You also need to set the frequency of updates. You need to set the source that you want the prices obtained from Select AlphaVantage. Alpha Vantage requires you to obtain and set an API key. It has been a long time since I did this but I think Moneydance points you where to register for this. Once you have the key register it in Moneydance using the Set API button. You can then go into the advanced screen and test for downloading.
To be honest however at this point in time I would tend to remove the Quotes and Exchange Rate extension and install and use the Quote Loader extension. I think it is likely you will have better results with it at this point in time. Instructions for it are in:
