Re: Computer crashed [General Questions #140426]
Hi derekkent23
So I tried the steps, including the "not obvious" ones :), but the app data
is still incorrect.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Hi derekkent23
So after trying the various steps, I realized that all the
transactions showing in the restored account (there were 2 but one had no
transactions) related to one bank account that seems to have been deleted.
I created a new account and transferred the transactions to that account.
So everything looks ok for now.
But I'd like to come back to one of your recommendations from an earlier
email. When using more than one computer, you said:
The default backup location can be found under HELP – SHOW ARCHIVE FOLDER.
This location is on your hard drive. In both cases you can select the
backup location and as such it is good practice to set the location on a
cloud server such as Dropbox, OneDrive etc, in case your hard drive fails.
If you are syncing and using a cloud server as a backup location don’t set
your computers to use the exact same backup location. When you sync you
have a primary computer and secondary computers. A primary data set is not
the same as a secondary data set and hence neither are there backups. But
as they use the same data set name it possible to get confused.
If I understand correctly, my primary computer can back up to OneDrive but
my secondary computer should back up to a different location? If so, I
didn't do that, both my primary and secondary backed up to the same
location on OneDrive, which allowed me to start using my secondary computer
almost immediately when the primary crashed again. Is this a problem? I
want to be clear what I should do when I get another Primary computer.
I have one last question about cleaning up the files, but I'll ask that
after.
Thanks again
Kerri

Hi kerri.maharaj
You can still backup your Secondary computer to OneDrive just to a different folder to that of the Primary.
What happens is if you use the same folder then when you restore from the backup the resulting restored Data Set can be a Primary or Secondary Data Set dependant on which was backed last before the restore. The Extension Toolbox will tell you if the Data Set is Primary or Secondary. Toolbox can convert the data Set type, Secondary to Primary, Primary to Secondary.
Hope this helps.

Thanks derekkent23
Your explanations are pretty awesome. Thanks a lot for your patience.
My last questions have to do with files on my C: drive and in OneDrive that
I want to clean up. They are labeled Q1-Q5. Hopefully they are just easy
Yes or No answers from you; I am not trying to impose on your time.
A screenshot of the C: drive moneydance folder is below:
Q1: Can I safely delete the files that show below i.e. the ones not in
folders, from config.dict to toolbox_update_log.txt?
Q2: In the archive folder shown below, there seems to be an old backup,
before I switched to OneDrive last year, when my computer crashed the first
time. Can I safely delete this file/backups folder?
Q3: In the Documents folder shown below, there are two folders. The first
KMAK.moneydance was the file before my computer crashed last week. In the
course of following your instructions to restore, the second file
KMAK_2025_02-01.moneydance was created, which now displays when I open MD
(see below).
Can I safely delete the original KMAK.moneydance folder?
Q4: If the KMAK.moneydance folder is deleted and I wanted to change
the filename from the KMAK_2025_02-01 back to KMAK.moneydance, is there a
safe way to do that without corrupting anything?
Q5: And lastly, in Onedrive, shown below, I have a bunch of files that I
would like to clean up. Could I safely delete the last files from the
bottom i.e.
KMAK.2024-05-25.moneydancearchive to KMAK.2025-02-02.moneydancearchive.
These all appear to be from my computer that has crashed and are no longer
needed.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi kerri.maharaj
Q1 - I would suggest only deleting the files ending in $SAVED$
Config.dict store your Moneydance key plus all the setting you have made in Moneydance.
custom_theme.properties store settings related to Custom Theme created under FILE – PREFERENCES – APPEARANCE – THEME – CUSTOMISE
errlog.txt is overwritten each time you close Moneydance.
toolbox_update_log.txt relates to the Extension Toolbox and depending on the feature you use can be recreated.
Q2 – any old backup files with the extension .moneydancearchive can be deleted but not the backups folder itself.
Q3 - Yes Can I safely delete the original KMAK.moneydance folder.
Q4 – Yes, With Moneydance closed edit the name in explorer leaving the extension .moneydance. when you open Moneydance it will open in the Welcome to Moneydance window with your new Data Set name listed.
Q5 – Yes you can safely delete old .moneydancearchive backup files that you no longer want.
Hope this helps.

Hi derekkent23
Can't thank you enough for all your help. I've done all your
recommendations.
Now I just need to get a primary PC that doesn't keep crashing!
Thanks again and take care.
