License
I bought my MD on 8/15/2011. It now asked me to purchase a new license. I'm presuming it is because I went back to the 2011 software after trying the new upgrade. How do I fix this?

Hi elliot.abrons,
The upgrade likely over-wrote your preferences file (config.dict). Config.dict is the file where your license key is preserved.
Try re-entering your license key into MD 2011.
To do so, open Moneydance, from the Menu bar, click on Help > Register Moneydance
If you've forgotten your license key, plunk the email address that you used to purchase Moneydance into the 'Lost Key' field of the following webpage:
http://infinitekind.com/purchase
Your license key will be emailed to you. It's easiest to Copy the license key from the email and Paste it into Moneydance.

I finally had enough guts to try the upgrade again.
I now have:
1) V2011R2 in my Applications folder and the current files in my
documents/MD Folder.
2) V2012.5 (downloaded today) dated 2/14/13 in my downloads folder which
opens up a file with a last entry in April of this year. I'm guessing
that the data file is in an internal MD library from the first attempt to
update. I have read Chapter 2 but but I never have gotten to the "Welcome
to Moneydance" window and thus never got to a "convert your file" option.
What do I do to get to a normal configuration?
I'm using MAC 10.6.8.

Hi Elliot,
For safety's sake, make a copy of your current Moneydance data file that's in my documents/MD.
Open Moneydance with the data file that will open, go to File > Open > Open Other.
Navigate to your former Moneydance data file in my documents/MD.
You should then be offered the Convert or Convert and Import options.
Convert will create the new data set in my documents/MD.
Convert and Import will created the data set in the internal Moneydance folder.

Kevin,
When I select "choose other" it goes directly to the Documents/MD Folder. However all the .md files are grayed out so I cannot select any file. The Moneydance.app is still in the downloads folder. Does that matter?

Hi Elliot,
Take a look at the following knowledge base article. It mentions the issue of a grayed out data file.

I looked at the link. The only thing I saw about grayed file was to right click on the grayed out file. Everything stayed gray. Any other suggestions?

Hi Elliot,
IMO, an unfortunate decision made with regard to MD 2012 was to have internal Moneydance data files located in a folder named 'Documents'. A better name may have been 'Data' or 'Files'. It is far too easy to confuse the Moneydance internal 'Documents' folder with the OS'es 'Documents' folder.
To add to the possible confusion, the Moneydance settings folder is named .moneydance and the MD 2012 data files have a .moneydance file extension.
If you open a file browser and navigate to your former Moneydance data file that is in the OS'es 'Documents' folder, does it have a .md file extension?
What is the exact name of the data file, with the extension?
When you use 'Open Other' make sure that you are navigating to that same location in the OS'es 'Documents' folder.

1) I went to the Documents/MD folder and the file name was "2005-PresentR1.md" I double clicked on it and it opened and gave a do you want to convert window but that file is a file from when I tried to upgrade the first time in February. I didn't do anything with that. I then started the 2011 app and the "2005-PresentR1.md" file opened which reflects all the data entered through last night. I just noticed there is also a "2005-PresentR1.md^" file in the Documents/MD Folder. It is a "document" instead of a "Moneydance Data" file. It is the same size as (14.3 M) as the Moneydance Data file.
2) Another question: When I make a copy of the 2011 data file is it better to do a copy paste or to use the MAC's duplicate function?

Hi Elliot,
1) It sounds like you may have two "2005-PresentR1.md" data files on your machine.
One that you used to toy around with MD 2012 and one that you keep current with MD 2011.
You could do a 'Search' of your machine to see if it reveals any duplicates or you could try this...
Open the up-to-date MD 2011 file and look to the title bar of the Moneydance window. Look to see if the path to your data file is displayed there.
Copy down the path if necessary.
This is the path that you should open using MD 2012's 'Open Other' option.
2) I have no experience in the Mas OS so I can't really answer to which of those options is preferable. Copy and Paste has always worked well for me in Windows.

Hello,
Kevin gives good advice on the first point, so let me know if that doesn't work and we'll go from there.
On the issue of copying a data file, using cut and paste or the duplicate option do the same thing, so just choose whatever seems most appropriate for your situation.

I finally figured out to do and it was simple. I went to the original MD file, did a Command I, and selected open with the 2012 App in stead of the 2011 App. I double clicked it and it was opened by 2012. From then on I open it by selecting the 2012 App. I think this discussion can be closed.
