All Data disappeared
I tried to delete one entry in my Money Dance data and instead all of it disappeared.
I had many years of records and data.
I've been using Money Dance for many years.
This is a crisis and I need help retrieving it all.

Where was this data being entered, security prices? Account register?
What version of MD and what OS and version?
If it is the most recent version try the undo command Command-Z (Windows Control-Z).
The easiest recovery is to go to the backup folder specified in the settings and use the previous day's backup.

Thank you for your reply.
I'm still having no luck.
I've tried the things you suggested and nothing seems to work. The version
of MoneyDance that I have seems to be 2021 (see attached).
There is no "Undo" function that I am able to find.
And,, where might I find the backup folder you mention in your
suggestions?
I am really desperate.
Please help.
Can I get a phone number from you and speak with you directly?
Thanks for your help,
Susan Zimmerman

This is a version from 2012 (12 years ago). There won't be many people who know the intricacies of a version that old, though there are a few who might be able to help.

IK/MD does not have phone support, it is a small company in the UK with worldwide users. sth and I(dtd) are users that try to help out in this public forum, not IK/MD support.

Most of the Moneydance support staff will have limited idea of how Moneydance 2012 works and it is different to the latest release, to start with It does not have unlimited undo.
If I recall correctly later versions of Moneydance 2012 did not have an internal backup visible option as such, it was intended you use the backup capabilities of standalone backup programs for example. I devised my own backup routine using script files to create zip files and copy them to external media.
Within the software it used the concept of checkpoint files as a way it could roll back to a previous version of the data file if a catastrophic error was encountered in the file.
These checkpoint files can also be used manually to roll back instructions can be found at:
https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/older-versions/md-2012-restoring-a-checkpoint
If the checkpoint files do not go back far enough and if you have not been creating your own backups, or do not use software that does - for example Time Machine on macOS, then I am afraid you are out of luck.

@dwg - is it possible the data isn't gone, but somehow a File/New was invoked, which opens to an empty dataset? I have no idea what is in 2012 and what is not...
Is there a way to get to the dataset list, given there is no backup list?

File => New works exactly the same way in MD 2012 as it does today.
The basic data set structure is the same in 2012 except it does not have the same file structures underneath it. MD2012 is monolithic so all data is in the one file at all times. the checkpoint files are really just the data file at a point in time.
The default documents folder is in the same place as today, I do not recall an internal menu option to open this location (and I am not on a machine at the moment I can have a look) but Explorer/Finder/File Manager can certainly look at the folder and see what is there.

The above information is correct about the 2012 version. I would first recommend looking to see if there are other data files listed in the File -> Open menu, as it's likely that you have simply opened or created a blank data file, and you need to switch back to your main data file. If that doesn't work, try the instructions in that link to restore a checkpoint.

Susan,
Ok, I didn't expect a 2012 version. However, that was the version I first started using. You are right that version did not have Undo. And I think automatic backups came later and I would manually copy the data file and then zip them up.
IIRC, the data files were wherever you kept them and not in the hidden sandbox area which came with later Apple Store versions. I think you can do a file search (using spotlight) for any files that end in (dot)md which is the money dance file extension. That should find all the money dance files on your disk.
Also, there were a couple of other things that could show an empty register. At the top of the register are some filter buttons for cleared or uncleared transactions. If any of those filters are used you might see an empty register.
IIRC there was also a mode to put the register in "split screen" mode that would hide a lot (all?) of the register entries.
Lastly, I don't think that the 2012 version works well on modern (ie more recently than Mac OS 10.11 - El Capitan) macOS versions. If you have updated your OS beyond that, I hight suggest updating Moneydance after you have found the correct file. The newer versions do have "undo" and automatic backups when quitting.
