problem with category editing

Greetings --

I may just be confused, but here's my specific problem:

I go to 'edit transactions' from the top menu bar. I have TWO 'miscellaneous' categories, so I go into one and change the name to 'miscellaneous-old' so as not to be confused when working. Then I double-click on it to bring up the transactions under that category, and do a batch change to change the category to 'miscellaneous.'

However, when I back out and look at 'edit categories' again, the transactions are still listed under 'miscellaneous-old,' and I can't delete 'miscellaneous-old' without deleting the transactions. The transactions show in their respective registers as 'miscellaneous,' even if I get to them from double-clicking on 'miscellaneous-old' under 'edit transactions.'

What's the deal? Why aren't those transactions moving out of 'miscellaneous-old' and into 'miscellaneous?' I've tried changing them from the accounts register also (rather than double-clicking under 'edit categories') and get the same result. How do I make these transactions move to their new category so I can delete the duplicate?

Thanks -- M.

I have a similar problem with stocks. Some of them have changed names over the years, and I'm trying to "clean up." I've edited the name of the security, and now have two with the same name, but they don't seem to want to "merge."

minerva: (By Edit transactions I assume you meant edit categories.)
That won't work, as you found. (I hope you were working on a copy of your data.)

What happened is you opened the "Miscellaneous" category register, and then you changed the transactions' category. What you should have done is changed the transactions' account. This is because you were looking at the other side of the transaction, and when you go to the other side, account and category are swapped.

If doing this from the account register, as you said you tried, it does work. You select the transactions and change their category. I'm not sure why it didn't seem to work. Is it possible that you had the account register open from before you renamed the category? And it didn't get refreshed (because the transaction categories will change when you rename a category.)

whits-end: Securities are totally different. I suggest starting a new thread for that.
