Moneydance saying I have to pay for the next version

Hello,

I have been a Moneydance user for years. I actually have LESS functionality than before because it will not sync with credit cards that it previously synced with. However, I manually enter my banking information to keep track of our small business. When I logged in a few months ago, it asked me to update and said that it was a FREE update. I updated it and now the software is saying that I need to purchase it again. I opened the old version and it said that they may have said it was free by mistake. I have SIGNIFICANT transactions that I have already entered into the new version. Given that issue was on your end, I would like for you to please register the version I am using for free. On the website, Moneydance says, "A one-time purchase, including a free upgrade to the next major release. We never "sunset" software, so you can use it for as long as you like without ever needing to pay again." I need to use this as soon as possible, so I appreciate your immediate attention to this. Thank you.

You seem to be quite angry. Only MD/IK can delete your comment.

Licenses are version specific. They do work FOREVER on the version (and a free upgrade to the next year). You may have upgraded beyond your license.

You can either upgrade for a significant discount or downgrade to the latest year your license is good for.

Your message suggests you should have upgrades forever. That has never been the policy of Moneydance. You have a license forever for the version you subscribed to.

Previous versions of Moneydance are available from:

I suspect you have a Moneydance 2022 license which would mean it is valid for Moneydance 2023. If you tell us the first 4 characters of your license key we can tell you what versions it will work with.

My point is that I upgraded because Moneydance said that I should upgrade and that it was free. I then used that version for over a month (manually inputting hundreds of transactions and reconciling bank statements). When I opened it yesterday, I received a message after inputting 100 entries that I needed to purchase this version. I don’t care about using the old vs the new version except the “old” version was overwritten when I upgraded (which was said to be free) and I would have to reenter over a year’s worth of information. I don’t think I should have free upgrades forever. I just want to use the work that I have done. It obviously isn’t fair for a company to say something is free and then change their mind because they made a mistake and make the customer pay for it. When I went back to my old version to see how much information I would have to re-enter, I received an upgrade message that said that some customers may have been offered the upgrade for free by mistake. That is how I know it was a mistake. If I had to pay for the upgrade, I would simply have declined it.

If you had Moneydance 2022, you are entitled to use Moneydance 2023. There are certainly no file changes between 2023 and 2024 so Moneydance 2023 should just open any file that has been worked in Moneydance 2024. Many people have gone back to Moneydance 2023 from 2024 without any problem.

If seems you want something that I doubt support can authorize, so to take your complaint further I suggest you email the owner of the company, that is Sean Reilly.

    That is:

@Andrea Carlton, you can remove the latest version that your license is not valid for and download a previous version that it is valid for. If you provide the first 4 digits/characters of your license people here can tell you what is the latest version that your license covers.

If you do not want to keep the upgrade that is fine, your file with the significant new entries in version 2024, will keep all its data and can be opened in version 2023 or 2022.

All these versions are available from IK and remain so, thus you can use that version you purchased and the on free yearly update forever.

There was briefly a bug in an update that implied that an update from 2023 to 2024 was available for free to some people, that was incorrect and has been fixed.

Personally, (my opinion only) the cost of a discounted update every 2 years is very reasonable given the usefulness of the program. I have used it quite a lot over the last 13 years and it has been a great time saver! Enter your existing license on the purchase page to see the discounted price.
