Copied Duplicate Files To Backup

In the process of sending files to a flashdrive for backup, I accidentally sent the files from the .moneydance folder in File Explorer instead of going down to the .moneydance/archives/backup folder. So it created the below-named file. The problem is that is now takes a much longer time to backup than before.

Is there some way to delete the redundant older files from the backup? Thank you.

Use toolbox extension. Click analyse dataset and objects. Upload that output here.

Thank you.  I am using MoneyDance version 2020.2.  When I open the "Extensions" and "Manage Extensions" options, I do not see an option for "Toolbox" or "Analyze Dataset and Objects".  I also checked the "Tools" dropdown, and was unable to find these options.

Is this because I am using an older version?  Thanks, again.

Thank you.  If I buy an update, will I be able to resolve the issue?

The update won’t solve the issue but it will allow toolbox to run. I need to see that output. I can’t promise I can point you to a fix, but I expect I can.

Also please grab help/console and upload that too.

I understand.  If I do run Toolbox, with my personal transactions be visible, or will it only be folder names?  I really appreciate your help, but I am hoping my data will be private.

    Thanks, again.

If you do buy an update, enter your current license into the update area to get a heavily discounted update.

Nope. The toolbox thing won’t show transactions. Just internal file names.
Anyway, you can look at the data before you send it.

    There is an alternative.
    From my site: https://yogi1967.github.io/MoneydancePythonScripts/
Download and unzip useful scripts: https://github.com/yogi1967/MoneydancePythonScripts/raw/master/dist...

    Locate the file: calculate_moneydance_objs_and_datasetsize.py

In moneydance, go to window/moneybot console. Click open script. Select that py file and ok. Then click run script. It’s the same as the toolbox thing.

    Mr. Beesley,

Here is the Toolbox analysis file you requested.  If you don't see a problem with the actual file, please note that every day a backup is saved, the NAME of the file is increased with the newest date of the backup being added on the end of the file name (which seems to be ever increasing).

If that is the case, could renaming the file resolve this?  Thank you.

    1. Please close MD and then using explorer rename the file:

      C:\Users\X.moneydance\Documents\QDATA 2_2021-08-04_2021-09-10_2021-11-17_2023-02-03_2023-04-17_2023-10-04_2023-11-08_2024-04-08_2024-04-15_2024-10-01 2.moneydance

      to
      C:\Users\X.moneydance\Documents\myfinances.moneydance

    2. Your dataset is fine. There’s nothing extra in it.

    3. You appear to be opening the backup file to launch MD rather than the actual file. This restores that dataset and then appends the date on the end. The more times you do this. The longer the name and the longer the process takes.

So… only launch MD from the app icon and only open the dataset. Or if you must, double click the dataset file and NOT the backup file.

    1. After you have renamed. Launch MD. Open the myfinances file. Then grab help/console and upload that here.

I closed MD, and renamed the "Documents" file as you suggested.

I only open MD through the icon, and have not attempted to retrieve the data from any source, but always allow the program to extract the date from whatever default source it normally does.

After renaming the file as you suggested, the program opens up a new "Getting Started with Moneydance" window.  At this window are two options:  "Re-open Last File", and "Open This Window".  Please advise at to which I should choose.

The other required specification is for "Import new account set".  When I click this, it defaults me to the backup folder where the backup file name is the extended name (I only renamed the "Documents" file as you suggested, and have not renamed the backup file name).  Should I rename the backup files to reflect only the most recent date of backup?

    Thank you for your help.

I didn't say rename the documents file... I said rename this file:

    location: C:\Users\X.moneydance\Documents
    filename: QDATA 2_2021-08-04_2021-09-10_2021-11-17_2023-02-03_2023-04-17_2023-10-04_2023-11-08_2024-04-08_2024-04-15_2024-10-01 2.moneydance

do not change the folder, but rename the file to: myfinances.moneydance

In the welcome screen you should see the myfinances.moneydance file? If not, select open other, navigate to C:\Users\X.moneydance\Documents and select: myfinances.moneydance

I should have been clearer.  I renamed the file you specified WITHIN the "Documents" folder.  And I did rename it to "myfinances.moneydance".  On the welcome screen, there is a "myfinances.moneydance" file, which I clicked.

The new backup appears to be naming things correctly now.  Thank you for your help.  Please consider this issue resolved.
