Video Issue in Transaction Remind with Windows High Contract Mode

Hi, I am using version 5172 with Windows. Recently I changed my Windows 10 video settings to a high contrast mode because of some vision problems I am having. As you might be able to see in the attached file screen shot, the background is a dark grey (almost black) and text is white in Windows 10.

In Moneydance, it does not seem that the Windows 10 contrast settings are carried into the application (and that is ok for now) but there is another issue that is a bigger problem for me.

When creating a transaction reminder some of the text is not visible at all. Specifically, this is in the tabs where the time periods are selected, Daily, weekly, monthly, etc., and in the sections where you enter, "Repeat on" and "days before scheduling."

Is there something I can change in Mondydance settings that will fix this?

Thanks, Henry Sully

Additionally, I am now noticing the same kind of issue from opening: File>Preferences...
This is actually much worse that the Transaction Reminder settings. I have not checked every possibility in the whole application. Suspect that there might be other setting windows that are similar.

    Hi Henry

Have you tried using a different Moneydance theme?
FILES – PREFERENCES – APPEARANCE tab – THEME dropdown.
You need to restart Moneydance to get the full effect.

    Hope this helps.

Apologizes for the typos also. The title should have said "High Contrast Mode" not Contract Mode, and I mistyped Moneydance also.

    Hi Derek,

Since I am in high contrast mode in Windows 10, I am unable to see any of the
text within the tabs in PREFERENCES. So, it is basically like I am blind when
trying to navigate the setting selections in Moneydance.  I would need to hope
back into Windows, change the video back out of high contrast mode, then go back
into Moneydance, play with appearances, and then go back into windows, change
back to high contrast mode, etc.  This could take a lot of time. But let me
consider doing this once and see if I can figure out what my current settings
are if that is something that would be helpful to locate the problem.  I spent a
good deal of time a while back to get the appearance where I liked it. Also, if
I made any changes now in this particular "appearance prototype" file, it will
affect my real files too. Could become a huge science project.  Hopefully, one
of the staff knows what is going on and can save me a lot of time...or just fix
this if possible in an update.

    Thanks,

    -Henry

Ok, turned off Windows contrast mode and opened up appearance window. The attachments shows my settings. Hopefully, this will help us figure out the problem. Thanks.

Ok, now I am back in high contrast mode and now that I know where the tabs are in MD, I have another screen shot file (page 3) that shows the appearance theme so we know what that looks like in Windows 10 HC mode.

    Hi Derek,

After further experimentation, I see now that there is a multitude of color
adjustments that can be made in the appearance window.  At first glance, I did
not understand that they were accessible with a scroll down bar.  So, hopefully
with a bit more effort I can dial in something that is acceptable while in the
    Windows High Contrast Mode.

Also, it seems that for whatever reason I don't need to exit and restart
Moneydance to see the effect, which is a very good thing. I do recall sometime
in the past that a restart was necessary. Perhaps 5172 has made this easier?

    Thanks, Henry

    Hi Henry

If you don't restart Moneydance you may find some parts have not updated to the new setting. So if you think this has happened try restarting.

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for the input. I did notice that when making a font change, it did not
seem to update everywhere unless I closed and reopened.

Question, when selecting the "customize..." button in appearance, there is a
note that says changing these settings will overwrite your customized theme. I
spent several hours making many adjustment to get things like I want them. If I
were to change themes from Custom to Default (for example) and then back again,
will this toggle the settings in the customized theme when returning to it, or
do the changes I made stick?  Is is possible to save these customized settings
in a backup file in case I need to restore them?

    Thanks, Henry

    Hi Henry

If you click HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER Windows file Explorer opens. Navigate up one level and you will see a number of files including one called custom_theme.properties
This is were your Customer Theme setting are stored. Close Moneydance and make a backup of this file so that if you ever want to return to the setting it contains after making further changes to the Customer Theme you can replace the current custom_theme.properties file.
If you change the Theme back to one of the standard themes your Custom Theme still exist and is still in the drop down list. However if you are in a Standard Theme and click Customise you will over write your custom setting and will start again with the Standard Theme as your base.
If you made a copy of your original custom theme file you can close Moneydance, delete the current custom_theme.properties file, copy the copy you made and rename it back to custom_theme.properties and on opening Moneydance your original Customer Theme settings are restored.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Derek,

Having another issue in the color settings. Not sure if this is a problem with my appearance settings or something going on with MD not being able to override Window's settings. Please see attachments in this email. I have a screenshot of the problem I will describe below and the custom theme properties file I am using for the MD color scheme in this email. Maybe you could use this file to simulate what I am seeing?

So, if I am in the normal Windows color settings (not hi-res), then when I go into a MD report settings window, there are certain texts that become black, rather than the orange settings I have selected in the appearance properties. As you can see, hopefully, the text where the various income and expenses menu is located are not visible because they are defaulting to black, rather than orange and since the background is black, it disappears. If I change the default background (the first custom color in the list) to dark green, then I can see the black text (not desired), yet some are orange as desired. The same is true in the pull-down menu where the date range is selected.

When I toggle the windows colors back into hi-res mode, then all the text in the MD report settings window goes to orange on a default background of black, which is what I want.

I suspect this might be a bug, but if you know what I can change in the "custom" appearance properties to solve this issue then that would be very helpful. Otherwise, how can I report this to MD as a bug?

    Thanks,

    Henry

    Hi Henry

I see the issue are having from your screen shots and I get the same results when I install your file on my Windows 11 laptop. However I don’t get the same results if I install your file on my Linux Feren OS laptop. See attached video.

I can't really speculate why Windows 11 does not give the same results as Linux Feren OS. It may be a Windows setting or just that your selected colours on the Java build of Moneydance for Windows just don’t play well together or it could be a fixable bug.

    Have Fun, Stay Safe.
