The Find & Replace extension is blinded by dark mode. The text isn't readable.

    Hi Henry,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.

Which version and build of Moneydance are you using?
To check, open Moneydance and select Moneydance --> About Moneydance

Can you let me know which operating system you're running on your computer?

What happens if you change the Appearance/Theme from Moneydance Settings.
Does this occur in other themes as well?

Is your system using dark or light mode?

    Thank you

MacOS 15.4.1, MD 5253, default theme

System switches automagically to dark mode at some point after sunset and to light mode sometime after sunrise.

I just noticed that the About… box is also confused.

[I replied 9 hours ago via email, but don't see the response here…so I repeated it.]

An issue comes up when one leaves Moneydance open for a long period, and has one's computer set to automatically switch between "light and dark modes".
We're working on some kind of solution, but if that's what's happening here, there are a few general options:

    • Turn off the automatic switching between light and dark modes.

    • Remember to quit Moneydance when you are done with it.

    • Try changing the Moneydance theme in Moneydance -> Preferences.

I believe this may only be an issue if you are using the Default theme in Moneydance, which tries to match your system, and is having trouble keeping up with the changes.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

I think you're exactly right! I typically leave MD running 24/7. But only the Find and Replace extension (and the About… window) exhibit this problem. The main MD window does not.

Now that iCloud Sync is fast again (much faster than DropBox, maybe 15-20 seconds vs. 3-4 minutes), maybe I should quit it more often.

    You should!
This is important also because Moneydance creates an automatic backup file each time you close your file, until the set number exist, then each file will be updated in turn.

When these files are stored in the default location, they're accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Backup Folder.

One can also amend the backup file settings via Moneydance --> Preferences, then select the 'Backups' tab, as outlined in this article of the Knowledge Base.

From this window, you can amend the backup location, and choose the maximum number of backups to be stored.

It is possible to amend the backup location, to ensure the automatic backup files are sent elsewhere.
For example, you can choose: an external drive, or a shared folder location like Dropbox, iCloud etc. This will make your data accessible from another system, even if you were to encounter complete computer failure, for instance.

You can also create manual backup files whenever you require, and store these files to a location of you choice. To create a manual backup file, you should choose File --> Export Backup. This will create a .moneydancearchive backup file - the same format as the auto backup files.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

I knew about the backup files (I have them set to 15), so I will close MD more often. However, the Find and Replace extension still has the original problem, whether relaunching MD or not.

Okay, this has become worse now!

The work-around is to quit and re-launch MD, but clearly there is a problem.

I'm sorry to hear that the problem persists.
Please feel free to send us your Moneydance error logs and we will look into this more closely.

They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file.

You can get to your error logs as follow:

    1) navigate to Help->Console Window to show the console log in a window

    or

    2) in the Finder, press ⌘⇧G and then copy and paste ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support into the field and press enter/return.

At that point the finder will show an internal folder containing the errlog.txt file which includes the log.

Finally you can paste the full content to your next reply.
To add an attachment to this thread, please click on the "Browse" button.

    Alternatively:

when you are in register view, navigate to Help/Moneydance->Console Window.

At the bottom left of the window you should see a round symbol and a downwards arrow.

Click the arrow and choose: File and Folders->Console log->Show file location.

In the following window you should see a file called error log, you can open the file and copy the content in your next reply or add it as an attachment (whichever is easier)

    Thank you

When you are viewing the main program, select Help > Console Window.

In this window, at the bottom left, you will see a circular icon with a downward arrow (as shown in this article).

Select this icon and choose File and Folders > Settings File.

Then select "Show in Finder" if you're using a Mac.

This will open a new File Explorer/Finder window, showing the location of the settings file.

Then close Moneydance fully but keep the file location window open.

In the new window you'll see a file called config.dict.
Once Moneydance is closed, right-click (or press Ctrl and click) on this file and rename it to config2.dict.

    Then open Moneydance again.

It will appear as though you've just installed the program for the first time, so you'll see the Welcome Window.

Your data file should be listed on the right of the window.

If not, choose "Open Other" and navigate to your data file.

Once you're viewing your data file again, choose Help > Register Moneydance. You can enter your license key here to remove the trial limitations.

    Done.

I would encourage you to forewarn customers that this will reset all their settings, and suggest that they make screenshots of those settings (as I did) so they can re-establish them.

…also all installed extensions are deleted!

But what exactly did this accomplish? The original complaint, that "Find & Replace blinded by dark mode!" is still a complaint. What more can I do?

    Let's back a little!

Did you try turning off the automatic switching between light and dark modes within your system (not Moneydance), as I suggested in post 3 of this thread?

Yes, renaming the config resets Moneydance settings to default.

Side note: Generally, you can easily re-install your extensions by navigating to Extensions->Manage Extensions

Also, please be re-assured that renaming the config again will return your settings to the previous state.

Finally, this is not a common issue as we have not received other reports of the same.

I did. When in Light mode, Find and Replace works fine, but in Dark mode (manual) it exhibits the same problem. But I prefer to leave it in auto. (The main window works as expected.)

BTW, I forgot to give you the numbers, sorry: MacOS 15.4.1, MD 5253

Another dark/light anomaly: This is during daylight hours; solution appears to be relaunching MD. (Added below next comment.)

    Any insight?
