Quote Loader Price Errors from Yahoo Today
Today, after working perfectly every day, the Quote Loader extension reported errors on all prices obtained on both my Windows 11 desktop computer and my MacBook Air M4, both with latest OS installed. I note that nobody else has reported that here or on a Google search.
The source for all prices is Yahoo. The same result was obtained after changing to Yahoo HD. Changing to FT yielded no errors, although yesterday's prices were recorded, probably due to time zone difference. It seems the problem lies with Yahoo and not Quote Loader, but I'm puzzled that no-one else has reported it.

Hi
Until the situation with Yahoo becomes clearer I suggest those having problems don’t keep hitting GET PRICES, it will only deepen the restrictions. Try to limit the use of GET PRICES to once a day.
The best move is to change the source to FT or FT HD. Attached is a PDF which is an extract from my PDF that was current the last time Yahoo played up.
As a last resort use the source Alpa Vantage, but be mindful of their restrictions. See extract from my current PDF attached.
Hope this helps.

Well set all to FT, ALT Ticker for GOOG so all 112 of my securities got pricing and saved. I guess it will be a mystery as to why some are able and others of us are not able to get prices from Yahoo/Yahoo HD. But it's working with FT. Derek, thank you. Mike Bray, thank you for a great MD add-on. Have appreciated your extension since the "old days" and didn't ever express that!!!

I've been getting the errors on Yahoo. I'm in the USA and have 30 securities. What has worked is I turn on VPN (to Sweden), restart the extension, then I can download from yahoo ! I've been able to replicate this several days now.
Cheers

I was able to get it to work by changing to FT.

Thanks for the VPN tip. Worked for me as well.

Hi
When using Yahoo as the source try to limit the use of GET PRICES to once a day or the restriction may return even when using VPN.

Running into the same issues with Quote Loader v320821 for MD 2020+2021. I have MD ver 2021.1 (3069)
I was able to write a reliable google sheets script that updates stock prices. The way I got around yahoo's shenanigans was to make a query for each stock, if it returned an error, wait a few seconds then resubmit the query again. After 5 attempts it moves on to the next stock. It hasn't failed me yet although it sometimes takes 3-4 query attempts to get a price.
If it's useful I can post the script here if anyone wants to play with it. I have no idea if this script can be used to make a moneydance extension script.

The Sweden VPN trick works for me as well.

I was also having the same issue in QL using the "Yahoo" source. Getting prices for my twelve securities on Windows 10 stopped working a few days ago. I switched over to FT and FT HD and I'm now getting prices again. However, I'm unable to get prices for Gold (GC=F) and Silver (SI=F), which I was able to do with Yahoo.

Hi becker6146
I don’t track gold or silver prices so the FT Ticker in the screenshot may not be equivalent to the Yahoo Tickers.
However the prices returned are close, so you may wish to investigate further.
The best I could find.
Have Fun, stay safe.

It's been completely busted for me since last partly-successful update May 1. Some securities last updated 4/29 or 4/30. Whatever Yahoo did to break this was rolled out in stages. There really ought to be a way to subscribe to this type of data (*without* extra charges) as part of the service I get from mainstream brokerages like Schwab or ETrade.

Hi Rich
Did you read my post and follow the advice in my post https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/problems/110273-quote-loader-price-errors-today#comment_63636892
By the way Yahoo still works for me in the UK. The issue seems to affect parts of the US only.
Hope that helps.

Well, what happens next time Financial Times makes a breaking-change to their website? Screen-scraping from public sites that don't want to enter into a contractual "we actually support this use-case" agreement is just a recipe for things breaking at sporadic intervals, while the work-for-free developer plays whack-a-mole wondering whether this will ever be truly stable. The developer of the extension I used to use finally gave up so that's why I'm using Michael Bray's efforts. I'm thankful for this service but wondering whether Infinite Kind itself has the clout to go to the likes of Schwab and demand that they support this quote-lookup service for free on behalf of customers who choose Moneydance. Infinite Kind could, for example, set up its own caching securities-lookup server and, with its own team, make sure the prices there are kept available. Then the core app would look up prices from Infinite Kind instead of trying to scrape sites that aren't under its control.
Without a free-to-use quote lookup service, sales of Moneydance would plunge. All of us including Infinite Kind management know this. So why is the company relying on free labor from third parties?
Sure, I'll switch everything over to FT for now. And then I'll install the next Quote Loader update and revert half my securities to Yahoo. And then a few months after that, I'll post here again and repeat the cycle.

Thank you derekkent23, Those FT symbols for Gold and Silver are good enough for my needs. I appreciate your help.

Hi
It look like Yahoo is down for all user on both Quote Loader and Quote and Exchange Rates.
Only post if Yahoo is still working for you.
47 Posted by robnich1 on 06 May, 2025 01:56 PM
FT HD works for me on 17 of my 18 securities but with the one exception, ONCY, it does not work even when I change the ticker symbol to ONCY:NAQ, which is the symbol as listed in Financial Times.
Any ideas why this fails, or suggestions for correcting the error?

Yahoo is still working for me if I use a VPN with a server in Sweden.

Hi robnich1
FT HD does not support historical data for Stocks, only Funds.
As Oncolytics Biotech Inc is a stock set source to FT.
Just use Ticker ONCY with no Exch Mod.
If you need history then change source to Alpha Vantage following my PDF instruction to enter a free Alpha Vantage key.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Derek! That worked and all my quotes are accurate now, using FT. You are an invaluable asset in this discussion group even though you are "just" a user.

Yahoo worked today for about 10% of my securities.... Very strange.
53 Posted by markstarr on 06 May, 2025 04:08 PM
Started getting this error this morning, 2025-05-06. Worked fine last evening.
I have 2 securities, getting both through Yahoo.
Checked for an update, saw there was one; installed it: still getting errors with Yahoo.
I see the suggestion to use FT; I switched to that, and was successful.
Is there a log file for seeing the errors?

Hi markstarr
Yes. Help - Console window

55 Posted by jeffstified on 06 May, 2025 05:37 PM
I'm having this issue, too. The URLs from the console window work fine in a browser. From the console output, there are 4 threads getting prices. At the start, they all make a request at the exact same timestamp and 1 of them gives the 429 error. Then, every attempt gives the error. It took only 1.6 seconds to make 28 requests. Can you add a delay between requests? It could be user adjustable on the parameters page.
56 Posted by markstarr on 06 May, 2025 10:57 PM
Interesting.
derekkent23: Thanks for the directions to the console window and for the note on using Alpha Vantage. (turns out I made a key last year but never used it.)
jeffstified: Yes, I too posted the URL (URI?) into my browser and received the JSON file.
I wonder if Yahoo is blocking the user-agent that Moneydance (or Quote Loader) is sending. That's the only thing I can think of.
Tomorrow, if I feel like it, I'll start up my network monitor and Fiddler to see of I can diagnose it further. (probably not since Alpha Vantage is working - but maybe)

+1 to all of this.
I suggested in the Quote Loader thread that Infinite Kind consider inking an agreement to provide Alpha Vantage at a more reasonable throttle point to Moneydance+ subscribers. AV's paid tiers are expensive overkill for retail investors, while the free API key is just limiting enough to be frustrating, and could go away tomorrow if AV was inclined to discontinue the service. Infinite Kind might have the clout to ink an affordable deal and bundle it into the + product. I would happily pay for this if it put this issue to bed once and for all.
I would wager that the scraping of Yahoo and FT in this manner is a violation of their respective AUPs. "Whack-a-mole" is the right term and this is going to continue to repeat as long as we're reliant on scraping. Is it asking too much that this be treated as core functionality rather than a labor of love community supported extension? :(
58 Posted by dwg on 07 May, 2025 12:11 AM
Alpha Vantage does not support all exchanges so I do not see it as a viable option for a product that is sold world wide.
Moneydance+ is also currently a North American only product and of no use for users in any of the other 200 odd countries.
If the expectation is that users are to pay for a service then they will expect to be able to use the whole service offering they are paying for i.e. both transactions downloads and price downloads.
It must be noted that the Q & ER extension is owned and maintained by TIK (Moneydance) themselves.
59 Posted by Timppa on 07 May, 2025 01:04 AM
You just made the point for me. + is a North American product.
I’m sorry AV doesn’t support every conceivable exchange out there, but it supports the ones MUCH of the user base needs. It’s just handicapped by the cost and lack of a user specifiable throttle to comply with their published API limits. Neither QL nor Q&ER will properly throttle requests without an extreme amount of micromanagement.
60 Posted by dwg on 07 May, 2025 02:14 AM
Q & ER has implemented a number of throttles for AV, but the target keeps moving. The latest seems to be a daily limit of the number of free downloads. I think that AV sees the free service as a trial teaser, if too many find it useful I suspect to see the number reduced to just enough to test what you can get.
QL has implemented various throttles for Yahoo over the years, but again it is a moving target.
The owners of Yahoo do not seem to want to find a way to monetize the data feed, preferring you to login and download.
