Moving data from MS Money
I've followed the instructions in Ch 16 of the Documentation, but am having difficulty correctly importing data to MD. I correctly export only the Checking account from MS Money. Yet, when I import my Checking account, all accounts are entered in MD, not just Checking. Moreover, all these other accounts have balances that are completely unrealistic. I'm perplexed, and obviously confused. Please help. Thank you...

Hi Kim,
Due to the nature of imported data, any account wherein funds were transferred to or from your Checking account will also be included in the import.
Pay no attention to the balances of those accounts until you've completed importing ALL of your accounts from MS Money. Hopefully with all of the data imported those accounts will come in line.
Once you've completed the import of all accounts, you may still need to make adjustments to the 'Initial Balance' of some accounts. Stock splits for securities (if any) will need to be re-applied and price quotes will need to be updated so as to bring any Investment accounts up-to-date.
Take your time. The export / import process can be anything but trivial if your financial data is complex.

Thanks very much for your help, Kevin, and your sage advice to 'take your time.' I'm still having much difficulty, but primarily because there are closed accounts which are referenced by some of my open accounts. You've helped me a lot, and I thank you.

Hi Kim,
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that things are coming along. If only sort of. :|
I wish that I could offer some more sage advise alas, it has been a number of years since I converted to MD from MS Money and it's all a bit of a fog by now.
I do remember it taking a few days to get some of the 'fudges' that I made in MS Money to stop haunting me in Moneydance. If I remember correctly, they too involved some long since closed accounts.
I had considered deleting those old accounts but the web of transfer txns between them and existing accounts quickly divulged that idea as an unworthy option.
If all else fails and you determine that you might just stay with MS Money, or if you are like me and want to keep MS Money running in parallel with MD; there are some clever people who have developed a couple of apps so as to keep online banking and price quotes available to MS Money users. (where available)
If you're interested, let me know and I'll post the links.
Again, glad I could help. Post back if you need any other help.

Hi Kevin ... Thanks for your ongoing interest and help. My transfers from MS Money into MD is a mess now, and I think I'll have to start over. I suspect my fundamental problem is the way MS Money is setup. If MS Money would run in Windows 8 I'd keep it. As it is, I'll recheck all the account structures in MS Money again. I've got about 40 accounts so it won't be too large a problem. Thanks again, and take care..............Kim

Hi Kim,
I hadn't realized that MS Money will not run on Win 8. It does run on Win 7.
Why do they do that?
If you are using a much older version of MS Money, you may want to try the free sunset version of MS Money Plus Deluxe. I believe it is the year 2008 version. Maybe it'll work on Win 8.
You can download it here. Type 'Money' into the Search field:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/default.aspx?WT.mc_id=MSCOM...
If you want to ensure the account structure gets created properly in Moneydance, you can try this two stage approach.
When you import a QIF file into Moneydance, the 'Import QIF File' form opens.
When it does so, click the option at the bottom of the form to 'Import Account Info Only'.
Doing so will import only the account structure (no transactions)
Do so for each account.
When I did my conversion, I did it this way.
The 'Import to: option to use an Existing Account or New Account seems to have no effect on this phase of the import as do the two File Source options.
However when importing the actual txns in stage two, do select an Existing Account and do select 'From Another Program' as the 'File Source'.

Hi Kevin -- I thank you for the suggestions you've given me. I have been
unable to successfully transfer my MS Money data. Instead of giving up on
MD, I decided to begin from scratch and have been very successful at it. I
believe my problem was the way in which I had MS Money organized in the
first place. I'm quite pleased with MD, and I do thank you for helping me
along in this process. Take care.........Kim

Hi Kim,
I'm sorry to hear that you were unable to salvage your MS Money data but I'm glad to hear that you were successful in getting started with MD.
It's unfortunate that Microsoft chose to only allow the user to export 1 account at a time from MS Money. It would've made it that much easier had they provided the means to export the entire data file as a singular file. Alas, it was not meant to be.
OK then, feel free to post back if you have any other questions. Good luck with the program.
