Moneydance archive
Hello folks,
My moneydance archive has suddenly grown in size. Is this expected? I never paid attention to this but every time I quit, it takes 10-15 minutes for it write out the backup before it exits.
Ignore the one from 2024. That was an empty account set.

The increase in size is a little out of the ordinary.
So has anything happened over the last few weeks? Added lots of attachments for example, performed substantial restructuring etc.
Where are you writing the backup to? Some locations can cause problems of one sort or another.

I have a guess. Run toolbox and click analyse dataset and objects. Then upload that output here.
Then, run toolbox shrink dataset, 1 days.

Hi Shriram,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.
Would you be able to send us a copy of your Moneydance error logs? The logs should include information on what might be causing the issue.
You could navigate to Help->Console Window and click the arrow (at the bottom left). Select Copy to Clipboard and attach or paste the full content in your next reply.
Alternatively, you should navigate to:
Local Disk(C:)>Users>Your Name>.moneydance>errlog.txt
Finally you can copy the full content into your next reply here.
Thank you

Nothing major changed: I added another instance of Moneydance (from my new
laptop) that loaded the account set from a dropbox location.

This is what I see on the analyze data set.
After running the shrink, the file size came down to 58.6MB. The backup on
exit now happens quickly. Thank you!

You truncated the log file off and missed off the critical information! If you can repaste the whole analysis output I can see what caused this issue. It’s useful to see even if your own issue is fixed. Can you do this?

At first glance there’s nothing abnormal.. BUT it is odd. It seems that there were loads of change files generated on 2025-07-12 which correlates to the jump in file size. So, did you perform some sort of mass import on that date or something?

Stuart:
Here is the sequence of events leading up to 7/12:
1) Early June: Had a windows version running for years with backup to
Dropbox enabled. This is the config for years.
2) About late June: started using Mac. Built the initial account set from
the dropbox backup. Noticed that it took a long while to load the accounts.
The backup dir had about ~200-300MB of files. This Mac instance backed up
to the same dropbox location/user credentials.
3) About 7/12: went back to the windows machine; started a new account set
from the dropbox backup; Mac is now inactive. Now exiting the app was
taking minutes. That is when I looked at the archive directory and saw the
file size balloon up even further.
Thank you for your time looking into this,
Shriram

Hmm. Ok. Thanks for the info. Glad your issue is fixed. You might need to run shrink on all sync copies too.
