Looking at the sort order is the first thing to do.

It's sorted by date, in the order of the transactions.

My guess is that you are seeing the total cash balance, but only the txns that are bank type. Look in the main register.

In the main Register the last column is headed "Cash Balance", but in the
Bank Register it's just "Balance". Are these supposed to be different or
both cash?

@mawigmore
The Cash Balance is a system-generated, non-editable field reflecting the account’s cash balance post-transaction, calculated according to the register’s sort sequence.
For more information about Investment Account Registers, please refer to this article of the Knowleddge Base.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Accounts are composed of transactions as you know
There are two different Views you can have of an Investment account
1. Investment Register view.
This shows all transactions that are in the register, but it does not show any bank specific type data, so all Bank type transactions are shown as Xfr transactions.
2. Bank Register View.
This looks the same as a Bank account register, and shows that type of data only.
Hence in the Bank register view you will not see all transactions, there will be no Investment specific transactions. As such any balance shown will not reflect the real balance in the account.
The aim of the Bank Register view is there to facilitate those types of Investment accounts that facilitate bank type transactions. It can also be used to facilitate cross currency transactions with investment accounts.

In an ideal world I would not have the Bank register showing a balance in an Investment Account, I am thinking the program is using the standard bank register code to render the display, so that is what you get.

Yes, it does seem to be an inelegant kludge to allow the entry of purely
cash transactions.
