Cannot get Money Dance to sync properly

I have 4 devices I would like to sync: a MacBook Pro, MacBook and 2 iPhones. I currently have a dropbox account. The data file for MD is in my Drop Box directory. Every device can enter data but nothing syncs unless the MacBook opens MD. I can make all the entries I want on the MacBook Pro and iPhones but none of the other devices can see the entries until I open MD on the MacBook. Why?

I got a little behind on my checking account. Entered an hour of data of my MacBook Pro. Closed MD. Open MD on the MacBook and it updated with the latest information from the last entries on an iPhone but did not sync with the hour of data I just entered on the MacBook Pro. Now I have to do it again.

Any advise on how to get everything to sync all the time on all devices would be appreciated. Can Money Dance do this or should I be looking for a different program?

    Hi Brad,

Can you send us the output of your console log from both computers? This can be found by going to Help -> Console window in Moneydance, then clicking the "Copy to clipboard" button and pasting the output to us here.

Also, can you send us a screenshot of the window that opens when you go to File -> Syncing in Moneydance from both computers as well? Here's how to take a screenshot in Mac OS X:

    Hi Brad,

I see that you're using the Network Sync extension on your MacBook, which can conflict with Moneydance 2012's built-in syncing. Can you remove it, then can you try closing Moneydance and moving your Dropbox folder (to your Documents folder, for example) using these instructions:

    https://www.dropbox.com/help/89/en

then opening Moneydance (you'll probably have to open your data set again if it's stored in your Dropbox folder, since the location will have moved) and disabling and re-enabling Dropbox syncing? This will force Moneydance to directly connect to your Dropbox account rather than writing it to the Dropbox folder on your computer, which can work better in some instances.

    Scott,

I'm a little confused. I deleted the extension "Network Syncing" from the MacBook. I moved the DropBox folder on the MacBook to the Documents folder through the DropBox preferences.

Now do I enable the DropBox Syncing under file and Syncing? Do I have to have it enabled on both the MacBook Pro and the MacBook? Or does the DropBox syncing only have to be enabled on one computer?

    Hi Brad,

Sorry I wasn't clear enough! Yes, once the Network Sync extension is removed, you want to enable syncing via File -> Syncing. If you do this on the MacBook, where you've already moved the Dropbox folder to within your Documents folder, Moneydance should connect to Dropbox directly for syncing--then, when you open the data set on your other computer, you shouldn't have to configure syncing again as it's already directly configured within your data set.

If you run into any problems, let us know!

I have one more question. Is this configuring the MacBook as the main computer? That was the problem I had before. The MacBook Pro is the computer that I access MD the most from. So if there is a "main computer" I need it to be the MacBook Pro.

    Hi Brad,

No, there isn't a "main" computer with this setup and both computers should be able to sync to your Apple iDevices, while having identical data on both computers.

Ok now I made 3-4 entries on my iPhone this weekend and neither my MacBook Pro nor my MacBook can see the entries I made. I printed a check with my MacBook Pro and the MacBook can see the entry but the iPhone cannot. We are now at the point the iPhone is not syncing with either computer.

    Hi Brad,

Can you try disabling and re-enabling Dropbox syncing in Moneydance via File -> Syncing and see if you're able to sync then? If you've already moved your Dropbox folder, you should be prompted to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder, which it needs to be able to sync to your iPhone.

Disabling and re-enabling syncing did not work. It is like there are two files running. The one the computers are using and the one the two iPhones are using. They are separate.

Should I disable the syncing and delete the hidden sync files in Dropbox and then re-enable syncing?

    Hi Brad,

Are you by any chance running Moneydance with the same data file on two computers at the same time? That would not be a good idea, as updates to the file on one machine will be overwritten by updates to the file on the other.

The mobile syncing happens regardless of whether the desktop version of Moneydance is running, but currently running two desktop versions of moneydance on the same data file (in dropbox, or other shared folder system) cannot avoid conflicts. We're working on computer-to-computer syncing for a future update, but it's not ready yet.

    Thanks,
    Sean

No I only have the MoneyDance data file open on 1 computer at a time. I'm very careful about that. Is that an issue. I understood before I purchased Money Dance I could do that.

OK, I just wanted to clarify that there weren't two computers running moneydance on the same data file at the same time. If there aren't, then we're fine in that department.

Let's get the syncing setup between one computer and one iPhone to begin with and then add devices. So, the first thing to do is what you've suggested and remove all of the hidden sync folders. To do this, take these steps:

    1) Disable Moneydance->Dropbox syncing on your desktop computer by opening your data file in Moneydance, selecting the File->Syncing menu, and de-selecting the checkbox to enable syncing
    2) Exit Moneydance (just to be sure)
    3) in the Moneydance app on your iPhone, go to settings and disable the dropbox connection
    4) Delete the entire Dropbox/.moneydancesync folder

Then go back and run the setup process again, starting with your computer. Then setup the syncing on your iPhone (there shouldn't be any choice of different documents/files to sync). After the computer and phone are syncing properly try adding another iPhone or iPad.

Once that is working, it should be safe to open the moneydance file from another computer, again making sure it's only ever open on one computer at a time.

    Thanks,
    Sean

I did the four steps you requested and I went back into MD on MacBook Pro. I re-enabled Syncing under File->Syncing menu. I went back to my iPhone and opened Money Dance and selected Syncing with Dropbox. It says:

"No Moneydance data files were found that have been configured to sync using this Dropbox account. Please make sure you have installed the Network Synchronizer extension and configured it to sync using Dropbox."

This seems to contradict what you said earlier about not needing the Network Synchronizer extension with Moneydance 2012.

Yes, the extension is no longer needed (nor helpful... it should *not* be installed) so the app's error message is misleading. It can take a little while for Dropbox to sync the files that Moneydance creates. Could you try loading the app again now? If it doesn't sync, has the Dropbox/.moneydancesync folder been re-created?

    Thanks,
    Sean

It does not seem like the Dropbox/.moneydancesync folder is being created? How long will I have to keep Moneydance open for this to happen?

It should be nearly immediate once you (re)enable the dropbox syncing checkbox in moneydance on your computer. If it isn't happening, could you capture any messages from your console and paste them here?

    Thanks

    Hi Brad,

Were you asked to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder when enabling Dropbox syncing via File -> Syncing?

Can you send us the output of your console log from both computers again? This can be found by going to Help -> Console window in Moneydance, then clicking the "Copy to clipboard" button and pasting the output to us here.

Also, can you send us a screenshot of the window that opens when you go to File -> Syncing in Moneydance from both computers as well again? Here's how to take a screenshot in Mac OS X:

Sorry for the repeats from earlier, but with all these changes I want to see where things are currently and go from there.

    Hi Brad,

Thanks for the information! I'm seeing two Dropbox folders on your computer (the one with brad as the username), so I think that's the issue. Can you use the instructions here:

    https://www.dropbox.com/help/89/en

to make sure that your Dropbox folder is within your Documents folder? This is where your data set is currently stored, so I want to make sure that your data set is in your Dropbox folder. If it is in your Documents folder already, can you close Moneydance and then rename or delete the "Dropbox" folder within your Home folder, then disable and enable Dropbox syncing again? You should be asked to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder then. Moneydance thinks that this is your actual Dropbox folder, when I think it's actually just a folder named "Dropbox" that isn't syncing to anything, so Moneydance is writing your syncing data into that folder, but then it isn't being synced with your iOS devices.

After doing that, can you try closing Moneydance on your computer and try opening it on Beth's and see if everything is syncing correctly then?

That was it. On both the MacBook and MacBook Pro I had a rogue DropBox folder that each computer was trying to sync to. Thank you for all your help with this issue and everything seems to be working properly again.
