Upgrade--can't find most current .md file?

Hi,

I realized that MD didn't have the updater extension installed anymore for some reason, so I added it and was informed that there is a new version. I downloaded it and replaced the old version. Now when I open the application, it gets data that is 6 months old--can't find the current version of the .md file. Any ideas where it went to?!?

    Hi Mark,

Take a look at the following knowledge base article and see if it helps:

Thanks, Kevin. I looked at that article and the one that shows where the files are located, but I cannot find the data file that stores everything since the last .md file was created in December. In other words, the application opens (opened) an archive file--there was no dialog when I first started the application, it seems like it just looked in the default location in ~/Documents/MoneydanceFiles and ostensibly grabbed what was there?.

When I go the path suggested in the knowledge base article, there is a folder that ends with .moneydance, and inside of that there is a file called root.mdinternal, and that is the only thing I can open via the dialog box from "Open other...".

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I'm going to give you a bunch of information. See if any of it helps.

The former data file will have a .md file extension.
Have you tried doing a 'Search' of your hard drive for files with a .md extension?

This new data set file system wreaks havoc on many users.
The new data set format is as follows:
    yourdatasetname.moneydance

As you've discovered, the yourdatasetname.moneydance 'library' may appear as a folder. The internal file, root.mdinternal is the actual data file.

When you convert your former .md data file to the new .moneydance data set, you should have been given two options. Convert or Convert and Import.

If you chose Convert then the new yourdatasetname.moneydance data set is in the same location as your former .md data file. Use 'Open Other' to navigate to it to open it.

If you chose Covert and Import then the new yourdatasetname.moneydance data set is in the internal location defined in the knowledge base article.

Do a 'Search' of your hard drive for .moneydance if you still can't find the more recent data set.

When you convert your former .md data file, Moneydance archives the former .md data file in an Archive folder.

In a Windows 7 environment, this Archive folder is located in:
    C:\ Users \ yourUserlogin \ .moneydance

I don't know where it is on a Mac.

Note the dot ( . ) in front of the folder .moneydance. This is not to be confused with the .moneydance file extension of the new data set format. (way too confusing)

If and when you locate the archive folder, your former .md data file should be in there.

At this point, you have a couple of options.
    1) Move the former .md data file from the archive folder to somewhere safe. My Documents for example. Then wash your hands of this update and re-install your prior version of Moneydance.
    2) Move the former .md data file from the archive folder to somewhere safe. My Documents for example. Then try the conversion again.

    Hi Kevin,

Sorry this is so long since responding, but I ended up doing a restore of my hard drive because I didn't have time to figure out what had happened.

I'm finally to a point where I'd like to be able to upgrade and clean up whatever had happened so it doesn't happen again. In looking at your suggestions below, I found out the following.

There are two files with a .md extension (both called ChristensonMoneydance.md). They are found in the following locations:

    ./Users/mark/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/archive/ChristensonMoneydance.md

    ./Users/mark/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/archive/ChristensonMoneydance.md

They both have dates of Dec 17, 2012, so it doesn't appear that they are the current files.

    There is another directory here:

    ./Users/mark/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/Documents/ChristensonMoneydance.moneydance

Inside this directory called ChristensonMoneydance.moneydance there is a file called root.mdinternal that appears to be the main data file. If I make a copy of this directory (ChristensonMoneydance.moneydance) and move it to a different location, then download the latest app (build 862), I can open the copied version and everything appears to be okay. The problem is that the extensions available are different, which suggests that the "old" version of Moneydance is maybe using a different set of preferences from what the newly downloaded version is using. I also can't figure out where backup versions are-in the prefs I specify "no more than 5 versions" but I don't see where these might be.

One other curiosity is that the settings are not taking into account my Retina display-I thought that was set by default in the newest version?

Would love to get things sorted to it is a "standard" installation on my Mac but don't want to lose my data. I'm not sure if there is an automated way to scrub EVERYTHING from my hard drive and start from scratch, with the exception of keeping my data file and putting it in the default location (wherever that might be).

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark

BTW, found the backup files, so ignore that question in my previous post :-)

    Hi Mark,

It sounds like you are now running the latest build of MD. MD 2012.5 (build 862)

Can you open Moneydance and from the Menu bar, go to Help > Console window. Copy and Paste the first several lines of text into your next post. This will help Moneydance Support in determining which version of Moneydance you are running and possibly provide the means of resolving the Retina issue.

From what I've read on these forums, the version of Moneydance made for older Mac OSes works with Retina:
    http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/4974-moneydance-l...

I will yield to Moneydance Support to help you in resolving the Preferences issue and possibly scrubbing your machine of Moneydance. I have no experience with the Mac OS and it sounds like it is going to take getting into the meat and potatoes of it all to resolve those issues. I feat that is beyond the scope of my experience.

I'm glad to hear though that you're up and running again.

    Dear Kevin
I've had just had exactly the same experience. This morning, I upgraded to the latest version of MD-version 2012.5 (8 62), replacing the existing .app file in Applications.

Not only have I lost the last 6 months of transactions but, more devastatingly, transactions imported from Quicken 1997 to 2006 and my Money 2006-2010 kept in separate .md files!

I am using a Mac OS X 10.8.5 I wish that I hadn't imported the ext that informs one when a newer version of MDance was available.

In summary, I had 3 .md files, now I am left with one my finance.md. This is 15 years of accounting, business and tax records.

The download notes on the upgrade link need to include a warning on this.
I need urgent assistance, help please, in terms that I can understand. I should be able to restore to last night's back-up from Time machine but naturally am reluctant to do this as I have never had to do this before.

In addition, MDance just "froze on me.

    MD Support,

Can you help Mark and Nigel?
I'm not experienced in the Mac OS. I do not want to risk making matters worse for them.

    Hi Mark,

Regarding the Retina display issue you're having, I would suggest switching to the 10.6 and below version of Moneydance as it uses Apple's java rather than our bundled Java and should work with your Retina display better than the 10.7 and above version. If you have your data set(s) stored in Moneydance's internal Documents folder, can you go to Help -> Show Documents Folder, then close Moneydance and move the data set(s) to a different folder outside of Moneydance's internal location (like to the Documents folder in your Home directory, for example). After doing that, then download the 10.6 and below version of Moneydance 2012 from here:

    http://infinitekind.com/downloads

This version is identical to the 10.7 and above version, but uses your system Java (which is most likely Apple's) instead of Moneydance's bundled Java, along with a few other minor differences. After that, launch the 10.6 and below version of Moneydance, use the Open Other button on the Welcome screen or File -> Open -> Open Other function in the main Moneydance window and open your data set(s) that you moved from the 10.7 and above version of Moneydance.

The 10.6 and below version uses a different storage location for your settings and some other data, so you may need to re-enter your license key and reconfigure Moneydance after switching to the 10.6 and below version and it may fix other issues that you're encountering.

I would also recommend moving or deleting any other versions of the Moneydance application from your Applications folder to make things easier in the future.
