Here's what I tried:
1. Install Moneydance on Linux.
2. Start Moneydance on Linux
3. got the open window
4. Found an old discussion about the topic, realized I''d need the license #, opened moneydance on Windows, copied license # to Linux
5. copy my .moneydance directory from Windows to Linux (not thinking about the fact that moneydance was open on Windows
6. told Linux Moneydance to open the local file in .moneydance
7. Registered the license #
8. didn''t see my data
9. exited Moneydance
10. delete .moneydance directory, recopied it from Windows
11. started Moneydance, can''t tell that anything happened, never got a new window
12. tried steps 10-12 again (yep, the definition of insanity)
13. Started this discussion

What next?

Opening the discussion helped me find the generic instructions for moving to a new computer, was copying the whole folder too much? Should I have just copied the one data file?

I think I told the Welcome window in step 6 just the .moneydance folder name, not the data file.

Maybe there''s a way to just adjust that? If I could get back to the welcome window somehow? But I get no windows when trying to start Moneydance.

If you copy the whole .moneydance user folder tree some things will work some will not, it generally is not catastrophic.

The biggest problem is that the .moneydance folder is a hidden folder and the Moneydance file picker has not been set up to access hidden folders.

Try this, open the Linux File manager and navigate down the hidden folder through the Moneydance Documents folder until you come to the Account set, highlight the account set you want to open, right click on it and select Open with, Moneydance should be one of the selections tell file manager to open the account set with Moneydance.

You may have to use an option within the file manager to show hidden files/folders. I do not use the Cinnamon DE so so not know where in the Nemo file manager the option is.
