Transfer from account does not show in receiving account

I am in the process of moving from Microsoft Money and have imported several accounts.
I am now updating my accounts but when I transfer from one account to another it does not show in the receiving account.
I have read lots of threads and think I am entering things correctly but can't figure out what is wrong.
I have attached screen dumps of transferring account, receiving account and "Show Other Side" of the transaction.
I have tried between other accounts but get the same result.
I hope you can help before the PC goes out the window!

    Hi nicoljamie,

I am in the process of moving from Microsoft Money and have imported several accounts.

Have you completed importing ALL of your accounts including closed accounts?

If not, do so before trying to reconcile any imported data.

Look to the following knowledge base article for step-by-step instructions:

One thing that might be a hint as to what is going on here is that when I look at your Receiving_Account.JPG screenshot and look in the left side bar I only see this one account "First Direct Current".

Where as when I look at your Transferring_Account.JPG screenshot there are multiple accounts listed in the left side bar. My guess is that you have created multiple data files and put you account "First Direct Current" is a separate data file.

Can you confirm is this is indeed the case? You should have all of your accounts in a single data file.

Thanks Ben I see what you mean. Have I set up the files wrong in Moneydance? Should I have imported all the files at once?

    Hi Jamie,

Provided your computer is still indoors... :)

Import each QIF file from MS Money, one at a time, into a single Moneydance data file.

Take your time, the process can be less than trivial depending on how complex your financial data is.

With regard to transfer transactions, you must select the actual receiving account as the Category of the txn.

Can you confirm that when you choose 'First Direct Current' as the Category for the transaction in the Savings account, that you are indeed selecting the actual 'First Direct Current' bank account from the Category drop-down list and not an Income or Expense category named 'First Direct Current'.

Scroll to the top of the Category drop-down list. The actual accounts are listed at the very top of the Category drop-down list.

    Hi Jamie,

If you can not get things sorted and decide that you may just want to stick with MS Money, I can provide you with a couple of links to free programs that allow MS Money users to continue to perform online banking and receive stock quotes.

The online banking program is geared towards financial institutions that provide a direct OFX connection. Thus, it is aimed mainly at users in the US.
It is a little geeky and it may seem a little intimidating but once it's set up, it works really well.

The price quotes program is straight forward, requires Java to run it.

Good luck, let us know how you make out. OK?

    Kevin,

I wonder if I can trouble you again. I have started again and am starting
    to import.

From the Welcome Page I chose “Import new account set” and then New Account
    (no choice).

I now have “Root Account – First Direct Current” which then has a list of
all the financial organisations the account has had dealings with but what
baffles me there is an account called First Direct Current which shown a
zero balance and an account called Imported Bank Account which shows the
    imported transactions.

    A couple of questions

    1. Do I change the name of Imported Bank Account to First Direct
    Account?

    2. When I import the next account do I again choose Import new account
    set?

    Hi Jamie,

It's not terribly important but it sounds like when you created the new data set, you named it after one of your accounts. It shouldn't really be named after of one of your accounts. Rather it should be named something like My Money or My Finances.

The one My Money (My Finances) data set will hold all of your accounts. Bank, Credit Card, Investments etc.

Once you've created the new data file, you can start to import the QIF files from MS Money by going from the Menu bar to File > Import...

A file browser will open allowing you to import a single QIF file. Repeat the process for each QIF file that you exported from MS Money, landing each of them into the existing accounts that you created as directed by step 7 of the knowledge base article.

If there are txns that need to be moved around you can do that afterwards.

I have started again and have read the instructions several times but am missing something. Can you please answer a couple of questions

1 I have used “Import a new set of accounts”. I now have a First Direct Current which shown a zero balance and an account called Imported Bank Account which shows the imported transactions. Can I put the transactions from the Imported Bank Account into the First Direct Current? This would tie in with the transaction categories.

2 When I import a second bank account do I do it from the current set of accounts or from “Import a new set of accounts”?

Sorry for all the questions but I obviously missing something vital.

    Hi Jamie,

    1) To move the txns from 'Imported Bank Account' to 'First Direct Current'.
Open Moneydance to the register of 'Imported Bank Account'.
    Select (highlight) any txn.
    Use key-combo CTRL-A.
All txns should now be highlighted.
Right-click (CTRL-click for Macs) any txn.
From the resulting context menu, select 'Batch Change' then 'Account'.
Select 'First Direct Current' from the 'Change Account to:' drop-down list.
    Click OK.

Doing so will move all of the highlighted txns from the register of 'Imported Bank Account' into the register of 'First Direct Current'.

    2) To import the next QIF file, open your current Moneydance data file.
From the Menu bar go to File > Import...
A file browser will open allowing you to import a single QIF file.
When you select the QIF file, the 'Import QIF File' form will open.
    (see screenshot)
Since you've created all of your accounts, per step 7 of the knowledge base article, they should be available from the drop-down list next to the 'Import to: Existing Account' option.
Select the 'File Source: From Another Program' option.
Select the 'Date Format', Decimal Character' and 'Currency Type' as required.

Repeat the process for each QIF file that you exported from MS Money, landing each of them into their existing accounts.

Thanks for all your help Kevin. I have got everything imported now and am starting to tidy things up.

What I was doing wrong was to set up the accounts from the Welcome Screen instead of from the Account Tool Bar after the initial set of accounts. A case of more hurry less speed.

Thanks again for your patience and help.

    Hi Jamie,

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that you've gotten things pretty much sorted. :]

It's unfortunate that Microsoft opted to only allow the user to export one account at a time. It would be SO much easier if the entire account set could be exported as one QIF file.

I'm glad I could help. Feel free to post back with any other questions.
