investment balances don't match on side bar vs. portfolio view

Am running MD 2010r3 (751) on Mac OS X 10.6.3 Java 13.2.0.

The balances shown for my investment accounts in the sidebar do not match the value for the account as shown in the Portfolio view of each individual account. These accounts have zero cash balances; all value is from share prices. For example, a certain stock has a current price of 25.90 USD, and I own 252.9359 shares. I calculate the current value as $6,551.04. That is what shows in the Portfolio view for this stock in both the 'current value' and the 'total' field. However, the sidebar displays a value of $6,758.45. There are no pending or future transactions for this security. Of the nine investment accounts I have defined in MD, eight exhibit this discrepancy between the side bar value and the portfolio view value. I have no idea what makes the one account who's values match different from the other eight.

    Hi Newbie,
File > Preferences... > General tab, try changing the 'Side Bar Balance Type' to see if that sets the balances right.

That fixed it! The balance type was set to 'balance'. When I changed it to 'current balance', the values all match (side bar vs. portfolio view).

I see, based on my checking account which does have future transactions, where 'balance' is apparently the sum of all current and future transactions; 'current balance' is the balance as of today's date (exclusive of future transactions).

What still has me totally puzzled is why there is a difference between the two balance types for my investment accounts, which don't have any future transactions.

    Oh well. Thanks again!

One more note: after changing the side bar balance type to 'current balance', and that making the side bar balances match those shown in the Portfolio view, I changed the side bar balance type back to 'balance'. The side bar values for my investment accounts didn't change i.e. they still match the values in the Portfolio view. But my checking account balance did change back to the balance of all current and future transactions.

I don't know if this is a bug, or just an 'undocumented feature'.

    Hi Newbie,
Sounds like something was just 'stuck' and you 'unstuck' it.
    Glad to hear it's fixed.

I've toyed around with this a bit more, and have discovered that the account values in the side bar appear to be 'fixed' at the time MD starts a session. For instance, I opened MD for the first time today, and the sidebar values matched the sidebar values and the balances shown in the 'investment accounts' section of the home page. I have the stock updater add-on, which runs each time I open MD. The extension ran after I opened MD, and the Portfolio values and the home page 'investment accounts' section values both updated -- but the side bar values did not. So now my sidebar values don't match. I closed MD and reopened it -- and voila! the sidebar values matched the portfolio view and 'investment accounts' section of the home page.

Kevin N., thanks again for your help.

Not at all. It does update the sidebar as you change accounts, or at least it tries to. There may be some cases where a change isn't reflected, and an extension that updates security prices could be one case. What happens if you toggle the sidebar off and on - does it show the right values after? (Whatever your Mac's equivalent to Ctrl+Shift+S Ctrl+Shift+S) I think if you find cases like that where the sidebar isn't getting updated, it should be reported as a bug.

When the sidebar has incorrect values (not matching the updated values on the 'portfolio view'), and turn off then on again the sidebar, the sidebar displays the correct values when it is turned back on. I'll try to report this bug.
