Printing Check Register / Transaction Report
Hi all!
I'm new to Moneydance -- actually, my mom is and I'm backing her up. A question: how does one print a check register-type report with a certain date range? We tried the Transaction report, but it lists transactions from lowest to highest dollar value. We need to send the accountant a simple list of all checks written in a given month, in date/check order.
Seems simple but it's stumped us. Many thanks!

Hi Wayne,
I can't reproduce this in the latest build currently 2010r3 (751)
For a workaround you could create the 'Transactions' report, then click on 'Copy to Clipboard', paste it into a spreadsheet then sort the data by Date/Check order.
Check to make sure your working with the latest build. You can download the installation files here. Just pick the one for your particular OS.

Thanks. I will try the new version and report back. If the problem persists I'll attach a screenshot.

Well, it's still happening in build 751. Screenshot is attached. I neglected to mention before that this is the Linux version.
Please note that items in the Checking window are in date/check order but that the Tools/Graphs and Reports/Transactions window sorts from lowest to highest dollar amount.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Wayne,
I'm going to have to yeild to the Moneydance support staff for this one. I have zero knowledge of the Linux OS. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks for trying, Kevin! I'll see what I can figure out.

Hi Wayne,
Upon a closer look at your screenshot, I can see what you mean. The data is sorted by 'Date' but then it's sorted by 'Amount' instead of 'Check #'.
I can concur that this is also the case in the Windows installation.
I would give it a day or two to see what the MD staff has to say about it.
It may be something that a Trac ticket should be created for.

Hi again, Kevin.
I guess the OS is irrelevant if you're seeing it in Windows. Being a Java app I would expect that anyway. But problems continue: printing the check register itself looks like a nightmare (I see others have gone round and round with this.) Column widths can be adjusted easily on screen (with the exception being the Balance column.) But printing is another matter. Have you had any luck there? Is there a way to customize column widths and visibility on the printed page?
Very frustrating. A promising app, but falls down on some basic, but critical, tasks. Unless I'm missing something that's right in front of me...
Thanks again.

Hi Wayne,
I haven't played around too much with printing reports.
It sounds like copying and pasting to a spreadsheet might provide more flexibility and work better for you.
If you register at http://moneydance.com/trac/register you can report bugs, request enhancements and vote on existing Trac tickets.
The developers are quite resonsive.
You'll receive an automated email that you need to reply to in order to complete the registration process.

I'll add my 2 cents here.
There is no capability for 2-column sorting. Your register is sorted by check number only, low-to-high, as indicated by the triangle in the Check# column.
Your report is sorted by date/time created, of which you can only see the date. This is the only option for transaction report - sort by date. Now I'll take a wild guess here. Your entries are the result of a download from a bank, which has the common habit of counting items which occur the same day in order from highest amount to lowest. (Cynics say this is to maximize the possible overdraft item fees; banks have a different take on this.) This would explain why within each date you are seeing items reported as if they are sorted by decreasing value. They aren't really; they are sorted by the order the bank processed them, which is their creation timestamps.
(It's such a nice explanation, if I do say so myself, that I don't think I want to know if it is completely wrong...)

To Kevin:
Yeah, I could paste into a speadsheet but that largely defeats the purpose of using Moneydance in the first place. Unfortunately it's not a paperless office and can't be, so being able to at least properly print a record of transactions is a critical function. Curious if you see the same thing: got into Checking, change the column widths (note that you're out of luck with Balance,) then File/Print Transactions. Do your columns look the same? Mine sure don't. Nowhere close to WYSIWYG. And the Transaction Report problem you've already confirmed. Bummer -- I hope they can sort that stuff out.
To ljb:
Hehehe. Well, I'm sorry to tell you you're completely wrong. But I appreciate the effort! Actually, all the data was hand-keyed. If you're interested I'd be curious to see if you have similar problems. Check it out: Tools/Graphs and Reports/Transactions. Does it sort as you would expect? Mine doesn't sort by date but goes from lowest to highest transaction amount and cannot be changed. Next check out the column width issue I mentioned above (I tried to just print the register after the report didn't work.) Do you get similar results?

OK, sorry, I made a mistake thinking your transactions were sorted by amount highest to lowest, when I can clearly see it is lowest to highest. However, I stand by the other part of my explanation: the transaction report orders by date/time created only, and does not take into account amount or check number. That is the result I get, and have always gotten.
You should be able to confirm this with two tests. Go into the account register and click on the date column header until there is an upward-facing triangle there. Now the register should be sorted the same as the transaction report - by increasing date/time.
You have a lot of transactions on one date (06/14/2010). Within that date, I am convinced the transactions are being sorted by the timestamp. That would be either when the transaction was entered by hand, or a bank's timestamp if it was downloaded. Here is how to check: Right-click on a transaction in the register and pick Show Transaction Details from the menu. You will see an XML "dump" of the transaction. Near the top, you should see DTENTERED which has the full timestamp of the transaction - the date you see on the screen and report, and the time which is not displayed. Check a few transactions and I really think you will see that the sort order is consistent with the timestamp.

Hi
I am sorry I have not jumped in sooner. Please use the "search report" that does sort by date and then check number.
With regarding to sorting by multiple columns in the register its self (not in reports) you can right click on the register and select "Sort by"->"Date/Check#". There are other multi column sorts for the register including "Sort by"->"Date/Amount" which will put deposits before payments.

Hi Ben,
Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
OS: Windows XP 5.1 x86
Java: 1.6.0_20 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
I was going to suggest the 'Search' report to the O.P. but when I created a simple 'Search' report of 4 txns all on the same day the check numbers were NOT in sequence.
The sort order appears to be focused on the Date / Amount.

I am not able to reproduce the problem you are having with the search report. See my response in the other thread. http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/questions/1679-sorting-by-...
