Did MoneyDance get dumber?
Hello, I've been using MoneyDance for about 5 years and really like it. The new version has me frustrated. I used to get better results from the 'auto-completion'. Sorry for not knowing your terminology, here's the scenario.
I download transactions from a .OFX from my bank. When I start going through the register to polish up the entries/categories and accept them, I notice that MoneyDance does not work as it once did.
Before, MD would automatically set the category based on the description name. So when I entered 'Electric Company' in the description, MD would auto-set the category for me to Utilities:Electric. That was a huge time saver. Now it doesn't do that. All the OFX imported entries default to 'Misc' category, and when I adjust the description name to something well-known (5 years worth of Electric Company entries), MD doesnt adjust the category.
Sadly this causes me a lot of time and remember what categories are for things, so I have to go back and look, scroll around, add text, ugh, it's a real turn-off.

Hi Chris,
File > Preferences... > Network tab, make sure there is a check mark next to 'Automatically Merge Downloaded Transactions'
Personally, I think it should be worded Automatically MATCH Downloaded Transactions

Ah cool, I would have probably never thought to look for a setting that controlled that type of behavior. I suppose you have a good reason for making it optional and turned off by default?

Now the annoying thing is this. The downloaded transactions do get matched up somewhat. When I correct a category or name of one I click enter and save the record. Then I click ctrl+enter to confirm it. When I do that it sets it back to what the transaction was before I corrected it.

Hi Chris,
What version of MD are you using? Help > About Moneydance
The most current version is 2010r3 (751)
If I remember correctly, what you are experiencing was an issue in earlier builds that was later corrected.
You can get the latest installation files here:

Just choose the right one for your particular operating system.

There is something missing in the MD2010 transaction accepting interface that was present in MD2008.
In MD2008 when you import transactions from an OFX file you get an extra transaction entry control at the top of the incoming transactions list. If you modify the description in control and tab MD auto enters its best guess in the category.
If you modify the description of an unconfirmed transaction in the MD2010 register and tab, MD2010 does not change the category. I think we should change this behaviour. I think that when you modify the description in MD2010 of an unconfirmed transaction and tab to accept an auto complete, the category should be changed to the best guess.
Thank you for posting this topic on the forum. I think this is a serious omission that needs to be rectified.
I have created a trac ticket. Here is the link:

I have spoken with the developers and they are prioritizing getting this one implemented.

Thanks for all the fast replies, sorry for not responding sooner. I'm using version 2010r3 (751), I update it pretty regularly. It sounds like Ben is describing what I get with MD. I do/did prefer the way MD2008 would auto-guess the category when I change the description for newly downloaded transactions.
Thanks for opening a ticket.

Hi Roger,
Install the Moneydance updater extention. Have it check for updates at startup.
