export to qif
Hi, I wanted to add a comment to the export to qif topic but found the topic had recently been closed.
After re-exporting and manually adding a .qif extension it appeared to generate a file other than plain text when viewed in text editor. The interesting thing is the Mac interpreted the file kind as a quicktime image. At least that's what the Finder is telling me.
This is on a Mac with iBank and Moneydance, but not Quicken 2007 for Mac, installed. Still, I thought the Mac would have recognized the QIF file extension with iBank and Moneydance installed.
I will be emailing this .qif to a client and trying to import it into Quicken for Mac 2007 later today.
Thanks.

Hi Alex
The file is exactly the same regardless of what it is called and what extension it has. The extension tells the operating system what type of file it is. This lets the OS give it the appropriate file icon and knows which application to open it with when you run the file. If you mac is confused about which progam to open QIF files with you can cange this. Heare is a link to some instruction on changing how to assiocate a file with a particular program on a mac.
Either way it does not matter what program the OS thinks should open the file you can still select and attempt to import it with quicken.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer

I understand, Ben.
This is more of an Apple issue, I think.
As qif files are fairly common, I would expect a qif to show up with there Intuit default assigned icon, like a doc icon for a Microsoft Word document.
I'd never seen this behavior before.
The initial export from the Mac to qif defaulted to a text file. The second export, where I manually entered the .qif extension, was interpreted as a quicktime image.
I am hoping the latter will be interpreted as a proper qif file when trying to import into Quicken 2007 for Mac.
Thank you for your timely response.

I'm sorry I didn't include the link on instruction for how to change the macs file associations. Here it is:

Hi Ben,
I am an Apple Consultant, fully versed in the instructions below.
Maybe some day I'll be as fully versed in Moneydance.
Thanks for your follow-up and timely replies.
Alex
