MD frozen on start-up

Bit of a problem with loading MD. Everything looked ok after transferring all my data from MS Money but now each day I start MD as soon as the home page loads, the program freezes up and I have to force quit (mac). I am still using the trial copy and the "Register" box still pops up but I cannot choose any of the options and nothing on MD works. I am however still able to open and use other programs while MD is frozen. I try re-pening MD a few times but same thing each time.

After a few attempts, I eventually get a pop up that states that the autosave is newer than the saved version - do I want to open it ? I click on yes, open the autosave version, and MD opens and works fine.

I suspect this is being caused by the stock/ER synchroniser which is set to update once a day (or the UK fund beta price downloader) so will try to isolate these and see if that sorts the problem meantime. Given the time invested in MD, the freezing is a bit disconcerting !

Funny you should mention this issue. I have had a similar problem with MD freezing on startup previously and again this morning. I am mainly using MD on Ubuntu 10.04 which has had some problems with other software so I assumed it was the OS.

I also noticed this morning that on startup the Yahoo UK prices downloader did not appear to run and MD froze. Ubuntu also has a Kill switch so I restarted without problems.

I have not fully tracked this problem yet but will watch over the next few days. I am on the latest fully registered version so it is nothing to do with the Trial Copy.

    Kevin and Neville,

This is almost certainly an issue with the extension. Would you please try un-installing the extension and seeing if the problem still occurs? Our developer also says "We have a replacement stock quote downloader that is a big improvement and is almost ready to release," so the problem is currently being worked on.

Please let me know how it goes with the extension removed,

    Hi

I have two copies of MD one on my laptop running on Vista and one on my desktop running Ubuntu10.04. I am testing the issue by starting each alternatively each day as it appears that the problem only occurs on startup.

Today I started my Laptop/Vista setup and initially MD froze with the comment at the bottom of the page indicating 'no accounts to update' and the small blue bar bottom right was about 30% complete.

I switched to another prog leaving MD on. When I returned about 10mins later it was working OK and had downloaded another days prices.

Will start with the Desktop/Ubuntu tomorrow and compare.

    Regards

Likewise, I've only come across the problem on initial start up each day. I disabled the auto price sync last night. On start up this morning, MD was still frozen, but did eventually start responding normally after about 1 min. This was much better than previous days where MD had to be force quit (MAC OSX Snow Leopard).

I'll remove the Yahoo UK Price Downloader (beta) completely tonight and see if that changes anything.

    Hi Angie n Kevin

This morning opened on Ubuntu Desktop machine no probs. Started quickly and downloaded 11/08/10 prices. Will test again tomorrow.

As I mentioned before Yahoo UK is always late updating prices and, as mentioned in another thread, Yahoo UK uses Mid prices not Bid.

Angie mentioned MD was developing their own Downloader, will this also use Yahoo UK prices or will it be able to download from other sources such as iii (http://www.iii.co.uk ) which state both Bid and Offer prices.

See below problems with Yahoo UK Fund prices

Not sure if this is a problem, suggestion or an advisory.

I have funds from Jupiter and Invesco Perpetual entered into my Portfolio on MD and recently sold some funds ready for reinvestment into other funds. I had a difference in the values rec'd compared with my portfolio so I investigated further.

Yahoo UK Finance site stores and therefore downloads to MD what Yahoo call the 'NAV', in reality this is not the Net Asset Value of the fund but the MID Price. Therefore MD records in the Portfolio the MID price and not the BID price. Of course when you sell the fund you receive only the BID price not the MID price so the net worth value of my investments is shown in MD as more than it actually is.

This does not affect Invesco Perpetual Funds as they only quote one price, however Jupiter have a BID/OFFER spread of approx 6%. Therefore on selling these funds one receives approx 3% less than the value in your portfolio. I have not checked other UK Funds but this is something that other UK users may want to investigate.

Not sure whether this can be addressed or whether there is a work around and I would be interested to know if this affects anyone else.

    End quote

The exchange rate downloadable and the Yahoo stock quotes extension are executed in the main thread. This means that they do not happen in the background, which is to say that when the download is occurring the entire program waits for it to finish. With a relatively slow connection and many prices to download this can take a while giving the appearance that the program has frozen.

The new version of the security price downlaoder being develpoerd by one of the Moneydance engineers as an open source project can be tried out by downloading it from here:

    http://www.mennesoft.com/yahooqt/

Currently it can download prices from finance.yahoo.com, finance.yahoo.co.uk and finance.google.com. Do do not seem to provide an interface for downloading current quotes so the google option is only for price histories.

Do you know if iii provide a download service that can be accessed with out requiring the user to have an account with the?

I have emailed iii to ask them about their services. As they are in competition with the likes of Yahoo Finance it may be advantageous for them to provide this service.
If I get a response I will let you know.

Noted the comments re download speed, will continue to monitor.

    Regards
