importing from old computer / old version
I had data in Moneydance on a computer that has had big problems.
I have installed and registered a Moneydance 2008 which is what we had at the time we registered. We may have updated if there were free updates. I am trying to bring in data or backups and I have tried Java and non-java versions of MD but I get this message no matter which backup file I try to use:
Error: java.lang.Exception: Invalid data format or file corrupted
As far as I know I am using the latest data file or backup as it has a recent enough date, January this year. Suggestions?

Hi Tommy,
What is the EXACT name along with the file extension of the backup file that you are trying to use?

The file is: CarrrouselAccounts.md
When I click it it opens a dialog which includes: "The file 'CarrrouselAccounts.md' is corrupt or missing. It can be restored from backup(s). Please select one from the following."
And a list of files with dates. The newest one is from January and the name is
CarrrouselAccounts.md-2015-01-28 01/28/2015 Regular backup file
When I select that one (or any of them) I get the error message I described.

Hi Tommy,
Give this a try...
Rename one of the backup files removing the appended Date.
For example: rename CarrouselAccounts.md-2015-01-28 so that it is then named
CarrouselAccounts.md
Make sure to remove the leading (-) in between the .md and the 2015.

Pretty sure I tried exactly that. But I will again.

I tried it with all the files, back to 2013. None of them worked. I'm wondering if I have a version problem. What about java, non-java? Should it matter? Can you send you a file?

Hi Tommy,
Here is a link to older versions of Moneydance.

Since you indicated that you were using MD 2008, you could try that first. Try MD 2010 if you're sure that you upgraded. Stay away from 2012 and 2014, they will change your file format and likely incur an upgrade fee.

Kevin - I think any upgrades would have been done however not any that incurred additional cost. I only remember the one time charge when we first got on the program. So if we began with '08 because I have the August 2008 receipt email. Could we have upgraded to 2010 without a charge?

Hi Tommy,
You are correct, holding a license key for MD 2008 would have granted you a free upgrade to MD 2010.

Tommy
Kevin's advice is sound, I would first try opening the back-up in MD 2010.
I've not heard of many people trying to convert a MD 2010 file to 2015 and am not sure if there will be significant issues, as there have been two file format changes since then.
If you still can't open the file in 2010 or 2008. I'll kick this up to the developers for their advice.

Installing 2010 build 757
OK! Success!
Back in business. Thank you. Fairly simple but I needed the guidance to work through it.
