Using Moneydance 2011 on two computers
Hi,
I've been using Moneydance 2011 on my iMac for years, and have installed the software on my MacBook as well. I've used it on both with no issues, but today it's giving me an error message on the MacBook that this is a limited preview and I need to register it. I can open and use it on the iMac with no problem.
When I go to the Help menu within the program, it doesn't give me a menu item for registering the product, and when I search "register" or "license", nothing comes up. When I click on Show All Help Topics, I get the progress wheel, but it never goes anywhere.
How can I re-register this product from my MacBook? I'm on OS Mavericks 10.9.5.
Thanks,
Sue

Hi Sue,
It sounds like the configuration file (config.dict) has been corrupted.
I'm not familiar with the Mac OS so I can't tell you where to find config.dict. Try doing a Search for it. It may or may not be a hidden file.
Once you locate it; rename it to config.dict.old. Do so with Moneydance closed.
When you restart Moneydance, the program will recreate a new config.dict file allowing you to re-enter your license key.
You will need to reconfigure any Preferences that you may have set.
Whatever you do, DO NOT try installing the latest upgrade. It will render your MD 2011 data file unreadable.
Hopefully, someone familiar with the Mac OS can chime in as to where config.dict resides on your machine.
HTH -Kevin N.

The file is hidden. Here's how to find it in OS X 10.10 (I'm hoping 10.9 will be the same):
In Finder, click on "Go" in the menu.
Select "Go to Folder"
In the window enter:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance
You should see the config.dict file there.
Hope that helps,
Art

I think you have most likely installed a more recent version of Moneydance that your license key is not valid for. Please can you verify the version of Moneydance you are running. To do this run Moneydance and from the menu bar select Help->Console Window... Then copy and paste the output of the console window to this discussion.

Thanks everyone. I'll try the config.dict stuff tomorrow. Meanwhile, here's the info you requested Ben. I've only had the 2011 version of Moneydance, not any more recent versions.

Can you confirm that you are running Moneydance 2011r2 (803) on both of your machines?

Here's the output from the console window of the program on my iMac. Don't know why it's so much shorter than on my MacBook.

Can you show me a screenshot of what you do see when you run Moneydance and click the help menu on the machine that is claiming to be unregistered.

Curiously, I was able to get in and work in Moneydance with no problem today. Previously, there were not topics for me to choose from in the Help menu. Today, I got License, Moneydance User Guide, and Register Moneydance, so I registered it and was up and running. My iMac was shut down for the moment, so maybe that's what did it. Even though I didn't have it open on my iMac when I had the issue the other day, maybe it was still running in the background, so I could only open it on my MacBook after I shut down my iMac?

Hi Sue,
Glad to hear that you're up and running again.
Another mystery in the world of 1's and 0's. :)
