Invisible modifications to reconciled transactions

Hi,

A week ago I noticed a transaction that had erroneously been put in the Increase column instead of the Decrease column, and fixed it.

Unfortunately, the other side of the transaction had been reconciled, and I stupidly didn't notice that I would be messing up my reconciled balances. MoneyDance gave me no warning that the change I was making would have that affect. (What I really needed to do was add adjusting entries rather than change the existing entry.)

It took me a couple of hours just now to find the problem.

I admit that what I did was stupid, but I STRONGLY believe that MoneyDance should have warned me. If there's some circumstance under which it's preferable not to warn people (though I cannot imagine what it would be), you could put this behavior under the control of a Preferences setting.

To me, this seems to be such a severe problem that it could motivate me to switch to another accounting program.

    Hi Gary

I agree with you completely in this regard. If you directly change a transaction that is marked as cleared you do get a warning message that doing so is going to change the cleared balance, however you are correct in that changing the other side of a transaction indirectly changes the value of cleared transaction and no waring is given.

I have created a ticket for this issue in or bug tracking system and will speak with the developer about it tomorrow. Here is the link to the ticket:

    Hi ben,

What's the status on this issue? Has the developer said he'll be fixing it soon? I see the ticket, but it doesn't have any updates about status since you entered it.

Thanks, by the way!!!! (I don't want to have to switch accounting programs again!)

OK, thanks for seeing this through. There's a good chance I would have switched to another accounting program if it wasn't fixed...
