Printing reports in Portrait mode

I'm sorry to open up this discussion again, but it's tax time for me and I'm having trouble printing reports. My last tax season was in 2008 using a previous version of MD and printing was no problem. Well I'm again in tax season for 2008 and 2009 (don't ask the details!) and my 2008 tax reports will not print in Portrait mode no matter what I try. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.4, the latest version of Moneydance and I have two Brother laser printers of very recent vintage. Moneydance has no page setup in the File Menu and there are no printer setup options for reports that I can find in preferences. The Print dialog box that comes up does not give me a choice on paper orientation. It shows Portrait but the printout is in landscape. Any help here?

I wasn't able to re-create the issue, but I'm currently working on a Windows machine so I'm not surprised. One (admittedly kludgey) work-around I would suggest for the moment is to try printing the report to a PDF first, then printing the PDF to the printer (rotating if necessary). It would be helpful for me to know which report(s) in particular you are having the issue with, especially if it is a problem with only some of the reports, and please also let me know what version of Java you are running. I'll check in with our developer about this tomorrow and see what other things he suggests to diagnose and resolve the issue.

The report I use is "Detailed Income and Expenses"

I've tried printing to .pdf and using both Preview and PDFpen to try to print. Rotating the document will not work. The problem is that the right most column will not move to the left so as to compress the sheet so that a portrait mode will be possible.

Re Java version, the only thing I could find is Standard Edition 6 Version 13.2.0

    Drsfg,

I spoke with our developer today, and I'm sorry to say that the solution to this issue is going to take some significant coding work, so it's not likely to be fixed in the short-term. The basic issue is that Moneydance will print any report that has more than 4 columns in landscape mode, and this isn't currently able to be adjusted in the printer page setup window. I have created a ticket for this issue. The ticket is attached to this discussion. By posting in this discussion your interest in the ticket has been registered. We'll post here when we have a better solution, or when a fix has been implemented.

The kludge I personally use is to copy the report to the clipboard and then paste into a spreadsheet (or even a text program) and print from there. I do this successfully with Open Office Calc or Writer, but I imagine it is possible from any spreadsheet program. I'm sorry that I don't have a more elegant solution for you.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

What is interesting is that the previous version of MD had no such problem. The problem is not something that makes MD unusable, it's just easier to look at the report in my tax binder in portrait mode

Thank you for keeping me posted.

Printer setting (Mac OS 10.6.4) is a pain. When I print most reports, the first column is clipped off and I cannot find a setting to change this. The report seems to be a fixed width and nothing can modify that. Creating a PDF of the report gives the same results.

    Russ,

We do recognize that this is an issue and have logged a bug ticket on this issue. I've attached the ticket to this thread so you'll be notified when there is progress on this.

In the meantime, the workarounds seem to be either doing a screenshot and printing from that, or using the "Copy to Clipboard" function to transfer the into a spreadsheet program and print from there. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

    Thanks!

I usually just copy the report to the clipboard and bring it into a spreadsheet.

I maintain the books for a couple of organizations and need to print out transaction reports at the end of each month. It is a pain to go through the extra steps of pasting into a spreadsheet just to be able to print the report correctly.

Is there a way to reduce the number of columns in a report? I don't need/want the "ACCOUNT" column on many of my reports. Also, can I get the description and memo to print on the same line, as I could in Quicken? Is there any way to tighten up the columns so they'll print in portrait?

    Hi Jane,

The bad news is that I don't believe there's currently a way to exclude columns from printing or resize them. However, the good news is that we recently put a lot of work into the report and graphs part of Moneydance, and so the next release of Moneydance will allow you to print reports in portrait with more than 4 columns. We hope to release our next build very soon, so I'll keep you posted. Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

    Hi all,

We've just published a preview version of Moneydance 2011:

    http://moneydance.com/preview/

This includes a few new reports, lots of small improvements and bug fixes as well as a complete overhaul of the transaction download-and-organizing system. Also, it is now possible to import .quickendata files from QEM into Moneydance. There are some rough edges and unfinished bits, so please only download this if you are curious and willing to deal with (and report!) problems. We'd be happy to have a lot of testing though, so we can iron out bugs before the f9inal release. If you have any trouble, please let us know!

I can't wait to see what's in the preview version, but I don't want to take the chance of messing up my accounts. Is there any way to have 2 copies of MD on my computer - the 2010r3 version which would remain my primary & the 2011 version to test & check out?

    Thank you,
    Kathy

    Hi Kathy,

It's a little tricky to run both at once. I'd say the simplest thing to is to just back up your data file and update to 2011. Then, you can play around with it as much as you want. When you want to go back to 2010, just uninstall 2011 and reinstall 2010. Then restore your data file from the backup.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

OK. I've taken the plunge & have replaced my .jar file with the 2011 beta .jar file as recommended on the link you gave for those upgrading. On the surface, nothing looks any different, including the version information I get when I click on "About Moneydance" in the Help tab. Is that how it should be?

This morning the Money Updater extension indicated that my MoneyDance software (just upgraded to 2011 beta) has a new version available. Is that message correct, or will it continue to indicate that until the 2011 is no longer a beta version?

    Thanks again,
    Kathy

Is there a list somewhere on either this website or the MD website of the new reports & at least some of the "small improvements" included in the 2011 beta version? As of now, I have yet to see any changes (assuming I used the JAR file for upgrade properly).

    Thank you,
    Kathy

    Hi,

I have not upgraded to the new version yet but I wanted to ask if the printing in portrait mode has been implemented for Macs. I am using OS 10.6.6. If so, will I ultimately be able to print my 2010 data in portrait mode or will only work for new data that I enter for 2011?

Also, if I risk trying the new version I'm not sure how do dis-install a program. When I have tried it in the past with other programs (not Moneydance) they have never gone back to where they were and frequently I had to completely remove them from the computer and then completely reinstall the old version.

    Thank you

    Kathy,

You can find out about some of the updates on our blog at: http://moneydance.com/blog/. We hope to have a full changelog posted on the preview page shortly.

To be sure you've updated to the preview, just check your About Moneydance page. It should say that you are using Moneydance 2011, build 778. If not, try downloading the full install from our website instead of just the jar file and update using that.

    Susan,

Portrait printing has indeed been implemented in 2011. You should be able to print all of your data in portrait mode, not just data you enter in MD 2011.

To remove Moneydance on Mac, you can just drag the old application to your Trash and then install the new application. Your data and preference are stored elsewhere, so you can do this safely.

    Hi!
Just to add to this discussion, I have been able to get columns to print more closely together by dragging the Amount column to the left and adjusting the font size down. That causes a two column report to print more in the center of the paper.

However, the Title of the report remains in its original position. I know printing enhancements are a work in progress. It would be most helpful, however, if you would add info about adjusting columns in the Reports section of the user documentation.

I'm coming over from Quicken/Windows to Moneydance/Mac and being unable to add/edit columns is a real drag. I don't want the "Account" column at all as I'm reporting on only one account at a time. And the "Amount" column's right border cannot be moved to the left allowing for the report to be printed in portrait mode. Landscape means I've got 8 pages instead of 5. So far, I'm in the Trial version and if I can't get this resolved I may not buy. Too bad, as MD got good reviews, but I want the report the way I want it and the User Guide gives no advice about editing report printouts.

    Hi Sue,

How can I change the font size of the report?

File > Preferences > Printing tab
For Macs I believe it's Moneydance > Preferences > Printing tab.
When all else fails, use the 'Copy to Clipboard' button and PASTE the data to a spreadsheet where it can be more easily formatted for printing.
There's also the 'Save' button to save the data to other formats that you may find useful.

I have given up doing much formatting of reports within MD. There just isn't enough control of formats for most of my use. I typically save to the clipboard and bring the report into a spreadsheet where I can control the format that I need.

Thanks Russ. This may be a Moneydance deal-breaker for me. I just downloaded a trial version of iBank and the report printing options that work best for me will probably tilt the scale. We do not do online banking, don't keep track of portfolios, etc., just categorize transactions in the check book for printed quarterly/year-to-date reports to an accountant. Being able to handle that easily is primo.
