Issues with MD 2015r4 build 1201
Since Ian encouraged me to do a dump of all my issues, this is my list of issues and suggestions. Some are trivial and cosmetic, some are functional issues. Two of them have been reported in other threads and have a link to them. They are in no particular order but just the list in my notes file as I came across them.
MoneyDance 2015 Issues
-
I attach two PNGs that I drag to the desktop from Safari web browser and then to each check in MD. These are the front and back images of the check. It would be great if I could drag images directly from the browser to MD instead of making intermediate copies on the desktop. If I do this the transaction turns “dark grey” but does not have an attachment.
-
Resizing portfolio width stops at way too wide and cuts of information if you make it smaller. The security “Name” field should continue to shrink as the window shrinks. Allow the window to get smaller since there is too much space between the security name and the data.
-
+Info window on right hand side that shows details of a bank transaction such as attachments covers part of scroll bar making it almost impossible to scroll main account. See reference for discussion.

Page Up/page down do not work for main window even if mouse is over it. Only pages left hand side area up and down. Also “Home” and “End” buttons should be activated.
-
Memorize reports does not retain column widths. Sometimes widths are too small for the data, but the widening them does not save when you memorize the change.
-
+If click on checking account with 2 attachments then account with 1, display gets overwritten but not cleared. Moving mouse over window clears it. See reference for attachment

Annualized return is now gone (but would like it back and correct) Really really would like an IRR calculation that was one of the main reasons to leave that application that starts with Q.
-
The “Transaction Details” window when right clicking on a transaction is too short. Make it taller so that it covers most of the details by default and does not have to automatically keep resizing it. Better would be to remember size and position of transaction details window.
-
If remove graph from side bar, the “+” advanced option does not show the graph so it cannot be re-added
-
Memorize reports comes up with a blank entry for the name not the name of the existing report I am editing.
-
When editing a report such as “Investment Performance” and selecting specific accounts, it lists all my accounts and then repeats all the securities again. But the securities are all indented as if they are part of the last alphabetical account. Maybe it should be clear that this is an ability to include/exclude specific securities but not part of that specific account.
-
If I mistakenly double-click a backup file, MD opens the primary file, then asks for the password for the backup file to open it. However, MD does not allow you to cancel or dismiss that password dialog. In fact after trying to cancel MD locks up and has to be force quit.
Suggestions
1. Left hand register pane should have negative balances in a red
font?
-
A little too much white space between lines in the home page. Tightening up the display by 1 pixel or so might help make the most efficient use of screen space. At the bottom of the “To Do” list the last entry is double high, it should just be single high like the 1st entry. The “Upcoming” list seems to have a much smaller spacing at the bottom. See attachment for display example.
-
I still don’t like the fact that clicks are active when the window is behind others (i.e. not the top most window). It doesn’t act like the Finder. I think we disagree on this.
-
Scroll bars disappear and are harder to find. I would like to keep them visible if possible. Or have the page up/page down Home/End keys work in the main window. It takes a bit of hunting with the mouse to get the magic scroll bar for the left hand menu to appear and scroll things. The main page scroll bar is always visible.
-
On the Home Page, the Accounts names should be in a bold font and perhaps a couple of points larger to make the headings for each account stand out from the holdings. If you have several investment accounts they all look like one big list instead of individual accounts,

I am going to bump this and hope that these issues get into the tracking system.

Yes, this is on our radar. Sorry I didn't ping you sooner about it. I'll get these in the bug tracker in the next few days.

OK, I've filed tickets for these issues. I have a couple of questions/notes about them. See below:
The focus does not follow the mouse, but those buttons work if you click in the register. Are you not seeing that at all, even after clicking?
I'm not seeing this in the mot recent preview. The list is noisy so it might be easy to miss, but I can see the missing graph listed under Graphs.
This also appears to work in the latest preview. If you are seeing a blank, can you let me know how you reproduce that? We might be doing something slightly different.
I think this might actually be a Java thing. I find this to be true in all of the Java apps on my Mac.
I need to check in with Sean about some of the UI suggestions, but I've filed bugs for everything else. We'll let you know as we update them.

Ian,
#4 The page Up/Page Down buttons do not work on the "Summary" (aka Home) page. Yes, they do work in the register, but I always hit them on the home page as well and then realize that they only move the left hand side and not what I am looking at.
#9 I also see the deleted graph in this build (1201). I hadn't tested this one lately but it was certainly missing around build 118X but thats great!
#10 I am not seeing the blank memorize problem tonight. I had seen it on previous build but nothing on the change log so I hadn't tested it lately.
Suggestion #2: I had a long discussion with Sean about the drop through clicks. I think it is contrary to the Apple HIG, but it may be a limitation of Java. Java is set up to just be close enough to a native Mac OS X app that one expects it to be exactly like an OS X app and the cognitive dissonance sets in!
So I think of the 4 issues you brought up. One is still there, 2 have been fixed and the other may or may not be a hopeless irritation.

OK, I see what you're saying about the summary screen scrolling now. I've filed a ticket for it. I'll do a little more research on the drop through clicks, but I suspect that it just be how it is.

Ian, if that is how Java works then I will have to live with it. It is just another reason java applications are not as good as native. The other big one that really annoys me is the lack of ability to bring individual windows to the foreground. I sometimes need to see a split view while looking at a PDF. But I can't bring the split window to the foreground without bringing the main window forward as well and covering my PDF! Java is slow as well. The scrolling is jumpy. The keys don't always work as expected.
Yes. it is cross platform but I just had to vent a bit about it being a second class solution for the Mac crowd... Just glad it isn't x-windows.

Just to continue the point about page up/down keys. They don't work when viewing a report which is a big PITA. That is one of the times you want to scroll up and down in the report window to see things.

I added that to the ticket.
I tried out bringing individual windows form Moneydance to the foreground, and was able to do so. It doesn't work with alt-tab, but I was able bring forward a single Moneydance window using Mission Control, or just by clicking that the corner of that window from another window. Does that not work for you?

No it doesn't. For example.
Open a checking account.
Open a split window.
Open a PDF file (now both windows are in the background with the PDF in the foreground)
Now click on any area of the split window.
This should have the split window, PDF and checking account window in that order of Z-buffer.
BUT the actual back checking account window will come forward and cover the PDF. It should be (in z-buffer order front to back) of Split window, PDF and then the checking account window.

And you know where else the up/down begin/end keys don't work? Yep, the console window..... Got that looking for debugging info tonight.

OK, ticket filed for the window issue. It looks like it works correctly on some windows (like the console window) but not others.
