Moneydance saving to desktop with extra icons

Hi,
I am running an iMac, SL 10.6.4 and MD 2010r3 (751). About two weeks ago, we lost power. The next day I restarted my computer. I found MD lost about 2 weeks worth of data and I now had an icon on my desktop as well as my dock. Now when I save, the file appears on my desktop as well. I have been trying to work on it and now I have three icons on my desktop: md.md, Moneydance8-22-10.md and md0902.md. I still have the original JMFCU.md icon in Applications. After reading the boards, I think I can save it to documents by creating a new folder, then Save as...to the new folder but I may be mistaken.
My questions are:
1. What do I do about the extra icons? I am afraid to delete them.
2. Can I save my data the way I described or is there a better way?
3. What would be an easy way to save to a flash drive as a back up? The last time I tried to do it, I could only open MD from the flash drive and then save it to the desktop again
Thanks,
Jim

    Hi Jim

What I think has happened is that you have inadvertently opened a Moneydance data file other than your primary data file. If you double clicked a data file other than your primary data file Moneydance would open that file instead and would then remember to use that file every time you ran the program.

You can tell Moneydance exactly which data file you want to open by running Moneydance and selecting File->Open and then browsing to the file.

The additional data files that have the data appended to the file name are automatically created backup files.

I recommend that you decide which data file you want to continue working with perhaps JMFCU.md or if your current file is more up to date use it. Move the file you want to use to your Documents folder. Then double click that data file to get Moneydance to open it. Moneydance will remember to use that file the next time you run the program.

You could indeed save the file to documents by selecting File->Save As... However this will create a copy of the data file.

As for the other files you can do what you like with them. I would put them in my Documents folder for now and when I am certain that I don't need them I would delete them.

Once you have the above sorted out and you know exactly which data file is being opened you can make a backup of the .md file just as you would back up any other file. i.e. copy the file using Finder to copy the file. Don't double click on the file that you have copied to the flash drive as this will tell Moneydance that you want it to start using the copy rather than the main file.

    Sincerely

    Hi Ben,
Thank you for your swift reply. I renamed my 0902.md file to something I could remember and did what you said. It worked perfectly. Saving to my flash drive worked also. The only continuing problem is the file is still saving to the desktop. It says
"md.0902.md-2010-09-08". Other than this, I am really pleased with MD.
    Thanks again,
    JIm

Run Moneydance and select File->Preferences. Click on the backup tab and change the location of the backup folder.
