REVERT FROM 2015 TO 2014 to recover from chkpt.
This is a follow up to problem I reported in February and is
still unresolved. I lost my the disc on my system and had to go to
new system. All data was apparently recovered but had to reinstall
moneydance. I had been on v2014 and requested that in download but
got 2015. It opened with blank file. I was able to open an manual
backup but this was from June 2014. David Hanley responded to my
problem and after some dialog advised renaming February chkpt. This
didn't work He suggested reversion to 2014 and said he would guide
me. This was weeks ago and despite chasing this I've had no follow
up.
IF I NEED TO REVERT, PLEASE TELL ME HOW, AND HOW TO FOLLOW
THAT.

Hi Mike,
I'm terribly sorry for our delayed response! Somehow your reply slipped through the cracks.
If you'd like to revert to Moneydance 2014, then I would suggest going to Help -> Show Documents Folder in Moneydance.
Once that folder opens, create a new folder named:
2015 Backup
and drag your *yourfilename*.moneydance data set into that new folder.
After that, go to Help -> Show Archive Folder in Moneydance and copy the *yourfilename*.moneydance.zip file to the Documents folder you opened earlier. Then, unzip the zip file that you moved to extract your original data set. Please note that this won't have any information that you've added since using Moneydance 2015; to get that information, you can export your data to a Moneydance 2010 file instead of restoring your data by going to File -> Export in Moneydance. The Moneydance 2010 file format doesn't support transaction attachments, so you'll lose those with this method.
After that, close and remove your Moneydance 2015 application and download Moneydance 2014 from here:
http://infinitekind.com/download_2014
and open Moneydance 2014. Your data should then open up again.
If it doesn't, then try resetting your config.dict and see if you can open Moneydance 2014 then. To do this, you have to rename your config.dict file. If you're using Mac OS X, then it should be located at one of these locations:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict
or:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict
You can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder again and enter those locations individually to bring up those folders.

Hi Scott, I finally got round to this but I’m afraid I don’t fully understand.
This the screenshot where I have created the new folder, but where do I go next? where is this zip file, I did a search for zip files but got no result.
The latest manual backup I have is the 240614, the files are all showing modified from 25/02/15 as that is when my failed disk was recovered.
I am confused by the various files involved, the ones above and the ckpt which are elsewhere, I sent screenshots of these to David Hanley back in March.
As i previously suggested I am happy to share screen or even give you access if we can get it fixed as I close to giving up which would be a real setback for me.
I am in U.K. now Tel: +441372879123 or I would be happy to contact you. I’m sure we could arrange a time (we are 5 hours ahead if EST)
Mike
Please note my email address, my verizon one doesn’t work with livemail in UK!

Hi Mike,
From the folder that you showed me in your screenshot, you want to go up one folder (to within the .moneydance folder), then navigate into the archive folder within your .moneydance folder and you should find your original data set in there.

This was the only file in the archive folder. It doesn’t look like a zip file, I decided to open it and got the second box shown below, I cancelled.
Have you seen the previous correspondence on this problem, with David Hanley, during this I set up a new folder and copied and renamed 3 chkpt files which I had assumed held the data I needed to recover. A window print is below.

I replied to this on the 13th, but have received no response – again, guess I’ve fallen through the cracks!!
Will resend, please check for it.
How about we SPEAK????

PLEASE RESPOND, this has been running for nearly 3 months!

Scott – What is happening, 2 weeks and no response!
I am a member of the Consumer Society U.K. who reviewed Moneydance and gave it a Best buy rating 4/5 *. The support also got that rating. WHERE is it?
I will relay my experiences to them as if I don’t hear from you I will have to abandon MD and find an alternative.

Hi Mike,
I'm terribly sorry that we've been dropping the ball on providing support for you! We'll work to improve and see if we can get you up and running again.
It looks like the only data file you had in your archive folder was a Moneydance file from 2011 or below, so I'm not sure when you were using that.
Are you using Moneydance 2014 now, or 2015 still? Do you want to use Moneydance 2014 or 2015? If you're using Moneydance 2014, then I'd suggest trying open the root.mdinternal file within the folder that you sent the screenshot of and see if that's your data.

It’s Moneydance 2015:2. I was previously on 2014, from July/2014
If I am to revert I would appreciate guidance on how to do it, please. I just want to get through the options and if I can’t recover get on with either reentering the data into MD or changing software.

Hi Mike,
Then I would suggest first upgrading to Moneydance 2015.3:
http://infinitekind.com/downloads
then try making a copy of the *yourfilename*.moneydance folder and opening the root.mdinternal file that you sent the screenshot of and see if that has your data.

Upgraded to 2015.3 and copied root file folder. Tried opening the root files but have gone backwards! Now only shows “Getting started with Moneydance” page, I tried “open other” and select root file but just went back to “getting....”
Next??
Just to recap, the disc was lost mid Feb and after recovery I downloaded MD 2015 started up and got data from 24th June which was last manual backup date.
I contacted support and under guidance renamed the 3 ckpt files from immediately before the crash, I’ve assumed that recovery was possible from these.
If I’m going back to 2014, what is the process?

Hi Mike,
Can you try going to File -> Import and opening the root.mdinternal file that way and see if that works?

Tried this on all 3 root files but no result. Select and open root file but nothing happens.

Hi Mike,
Can you try opening the file again, then send me your errlog.txt file? If you're using Mac OS X, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
or:
Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and type in:
~/Library
This should pull up your local Library folder.
If you're using Windows, it should be located at:
C:\Users\\(yourusername)\\.moneydance\errlog.txt

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the logs! I think I see what's happening now. When you open a root.mdinternal file, it has to be located within a folder that's named in the format *yourfilename*.moneydance, so can you create a folder named what ever you'd like as long as it has a .moneydance extension, then move the root.mdinternal file to within that folder and try to open it with Moneydance then?

SUCCESS!! This morning I followed your advice and after a few false starts it worked. Initially an early Feb. root file came up with transactions to mid Nov. 14, then with a later one mid Jan 15, finally the latest one was up to 14th Feb which is about the time my system crashed with a disk fault. I have added no data since that date but at least that’s only 3 months. I appreciate your help on this and responsiveness over the past week.
My/our efforts to resolve this problem has contributed to and left a mess of files on my system, which has been very confusing. I would very much appreciate your definitive advice on what file folder setup for Moneydance should be there and where it should be for a standard configuration. (I currently have md folders and root files all over the place!)
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
Your entire *yourfilename*.moneydance folder is your data set, so any time you're working with it, you should move or copy the entire folder and not anything from within it individually (unless we give specific instructions for doing so).
I can't really give specific instructions for cleaning up your computer of old data since I don't know what you need and don't or where it's located, but generally I would suggest cleaning up any other unused root.mdinternal files or *yourfilename*.moneydance data sets that you don't want and putting them in your Trash folder, then opening Moneydance and making sure that all your data is present (including any other data sets that you have, which can be accessed by going to File -> Open). Once you've confirmed that you have all your data in Moneydance, if you'd like, you can then empty your Trash folder.
I'm glad to hear that it's working for you now! Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!
