Issues with new Quotes and Exchange Rates Extension

Good to see this new extension - it works fairly well for me. I do have a few issues however:

1) if I select Google for the historical data and Yahoo for the current price, then it only seems to go for the history from Google, and it doesn't get a current quote from Yahoo.

2) I have an investment account with EUR as the base currency, and it contains USD fund with symbol LU0052750758USD. If I leave the "Stock Exchange" set to "Default", then it retrieves the correct price from Yahoo - let's say $25.38 - but it LISTS the price as being €25.38 (€ instead of $) and enters €25.38 amount into the fund's history - which of course is NOT right! However, if I change the stock exchange to an American one (e.g. "American Stock Exchange") then it lists the price as $25.38 and enters this USD amount into the fund's history. This happens with all currencies, for example a Danish fund in DKK is listed as 704.50DKK on Yahoo, but if I leave the exchange as "default" then Moneydance enters 704.50 EUR into the history... changing to Copenhagen stock exchange corrects this.

3) When I select Yahoo UK, the extension appears to use "http://uk.old.finance.yahoo.com" instead of "http://uk.finance.yahoo.com". Is this correct?

4) Now that I have this extension installed, can I remove the other two (Exchange rate downloader, and Stock/Forex sychroniser)?

Thanks in advance,
Scott Owen.

Is there any update on when this issue is going to be fixed?

My quotes are still only showing until 15/11/2010.

    Thanks

I am not sure we can fix the November 15 issue for some of the funds as Yahoo is no longer providing price history for certain mutual funds.

The extension author has looked at other sites for possible fixes but hasn't found anything that works.

The problem isn't price history - Yahoo UK has never provided that for any of the funds I have listed for as long as I've used it - but the tool is no longer providing the CURRENT price, which stopped working after the last update.

The alternative is to be able to develop an extension which allows us to specify a site and the search pattern required to extract the current price of a particular stock. That would be the best solution for me, anyway.

    Tom,

I agree with Scott... the history has never worked (for me). It's the current prices that I'm interested in. These seem to be updating up to 15/11/2010.

Just doing a little research, it does appear that Yahoo does not seem to be providing the fund prices. However, there are other sites that do this - and they don't seem to 3 or 4 days out of date as the Yahoo quotes always seemed to be.

    For example :-

    http://funds.ft.com/funds/Homepage.aspx

I've tried all my fund symbols, and they all seem to work. For example :-

    GB0002583598
    GB0033138024
    GB0000150374
    GB0006664683

If you need anything else, please let me know.

Is the extension still open source? I'm a Java developer, so maybe it's something I could look at doing myself.

    Thanks,
    Rick

I agree, MD never did download history on UK funds from Yahoo UK.

The history was built up by daily downloads of current price and stored in Securities Detail in MD.

It is possible that Yahoo have stopped providing the info and as yet I have not investigated other sites but I have most of my UK funds with Hargreaves Lansdown and they keep the fund prices up to date daily and I am sure they are not doing it manually.

Agree with Scott and Rick. I'm also far more interested in getting the last stock prices of all securities in the MD portfolio. Using MD quite regularly, history of stock prices will be build up quite quickly.

I tried one of my funds (FR0000018111) on Financial Times (link Rick provided). But unfortunatly it could find it.

It's almost as if we need the particular WebService linked to each security/fund. I know this would be quite complex, but there must be some way of using a website as a 'plug in'.

The plug ins would be developed to an interface.

So we'd have plug ins for Yahoo US, Yahoo UK, Financial Times etc.

    Thanks,
    Rick

@Richard - actually, I think it's much simpler than that. We need an extension which is able to take either:

    a) a link to a page, a regular expression in order to locate the price and date on the page, and a currency, or

    b) an extension which accepts CSV (comma separated value) files.

Really, this is not rocket science. The problem is the COMPLETE radio silence from the "developers" (I begin to doubt the plural) who appear to have done absolutely no work on Moneydance in relation to the bugs relating to foreign currency holdings (bugs which have been open for a couple of years). Very frustrating, since this is otherwise an excellent product. What gives?!?

I've just discovered that Yahoo UK is now providing accurate data for a number of my funds via the ".sw" (Swiss EBS) exchange.

For example, for the fund with ISIN LU0187079180, I searched for symbols/exchanges using http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/lookup?s=LU0187079180, and discovered that accurate up-to-date info is available at http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=1794743.SW. It will even allow me to download the information as a .CSV.

In other words, this extension should be able to provide the information since it is available for download from yahoo UK, however I am unable to find any Swiss exchange - and specificially the EBS - in the list of exchanges in the extension.

If this could be corrected, it may just solve these issue for a number of funds.

    Regards,
    Scott.

UPDATE: using the new symbols provided by Yahoo (US or UK), I am now able to get quotes to virtually all of my funds. Most of my funds are listed on the Luxembourg exchange, but these stopped updating on Yahoo mid-November.

As I said, using the new symbols (e.g. LU0187079180EUR.LU stopped updating in November, but a quote for this fund is now available using 1794743 from a number of exchanges) I am able to get quotes and history.

HOWEVER, the quotes/history I get from most of the exchanges are not the same as the prices listed on the Luxembourg exchange (and therefore my prices). The only exchange which is identical to the Luxembourg exchange is the Swiss EBS exchange, but the extension doesn't allow me to select that (e.g. 1794743.SW doesn't work) even though Yahoo US&UK provide data for this exchange.

    Regards,
    Scott.

Am I right in saying you searched Yahoo with the LU number and found the other code? Does this work for UK listed funds?

    Hi Neville,

I searched for the funds using http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/lookup?s=
and entered the fund's ISIN code. Yahoo will list the various exchanges where it is listed and what symbol it uses on that exchange. In the case of LU0187079180 it is listed on various European exchanges, for example as 1794743 on the Stuttgart exchange. Click on each of the exchanges it provides to see which one is supplying up-to-date information, then enter that info (symbol+exchange) into the Moneydance extension.

Tried on my funds but only successful with some LU listed funds (counted in the UK as 'offshore' funds).

Have managed to get history but not current for Aberdeen Global Smaller Companies LU0231459107 this comes up as ABD9.BE. Loading this into the updater I can download the history but not current price. Obviously this fund is quoted on the Berlin exchange and MD connects OK but not for the current price? Maybe if I start up as normal tomorrow it will update current also.

It did download the vol which has not been done before.

    Just rec'd your post.

Yes I agree the one quoted above was on all the German exchanges but when I enter normal UK funds Yahoo only list the London exchange so it looks like it will only work with UK Offshore funds.

All my usual UK Funds still no download.

Never mind thanks for trying. I have given up trying to find alternative source and manually update prices for the time being until (and if) MD manage to correct this fault.

Very dissappointed with the time scale. This started mid Nov but MD cannot seem to get to the bottom of this.

I am sure there are other sources for this data as it is only 'end of day' so no charges incurred as there are sometimes with live prices.

    Hi Neville,

I have found Bloomberg has accurate information available for free. For example, your First State Indian Subcontinent fund is listed here:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/data?pid=symsearch&Query=First+St...

    with its London prices here:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=FSINSAE:LN

The price info could easily be retrieved using an extension which searched for a string "NAV: nnnn.nn CUR" (where nnnn.nnn is a string of digits, and CUR is the currency). It's on every Bloomberg page and it accurately lists the NAV and correct currency for a fund.

I really don't understand why this isn't a priority for the developer(s) of Moneydance. After all, with all the online tools available, this is one of Moneydance's key differentiators.

    Regards,
    Scott.

Thank you all for your responses.  However, I am still having problems.

I have removed all extensions except Python interface, Text file importer, and Moneydance Updater.  However, I still cannot find "Quotes and Exchange Rate Updater".  I use the pull down menu, Extensions, and then click Add.  Then with "From the Internet" selected as the source, I click "Next".  I then see a table with the names of 7 extensions.  But none of these names in any way resembles  "Quotes and Exchange Rate Updater".

Once again, I thank you and I hope you will continue your support until this problem is solved.

I am including a screen shot of the menu I have for extensions. You can see the quote and exchange extension listed after the credit card extension.

If you still can't find it, please send me a screen shot of both your extension drop down menu from your tool bar and the extension menu from the add box.

For everyone else on this thread. Build 72 has been released. I am starting to test it to see which bugs it fixed.

    Hi Robert,
Are you using MD 2008? It is my understanding that the Quotes and Exchange Rates Updater Extension does not work in MD 2008 therefore it may not be listed as an available extension.
For MD 2008, you'll need the older Yahoo Quotes extension.

Edit: If you need it, I've attached the Yahoo Quotes extension in post 2 of the following thread:
