reconcile issues

  1. Is there any easy way to tell which items in the check account list came from the online download and which are the ones I entered? The handy auto-complete feature makes the descriptions identical, and if I laboriously go into the details and puzzle over the code there, I can see which ones came from the bank and which ones I entered, but that is a lot of work.

  2. When I click on reconcile, what I am wanting to do is make sure what the bank downloads and what I've entered match up. The vast majority of these are debit card transactions, so I have little or nothing that can tell me which is the one I entered vs which is the one that came from the bank.

  3. This becomes a real issue when the one I entered has a split I want to record, but of course the one from the bank won't show that. So I want to keep the one I entered and delete the other one?

  4. I read in one discussion here something about the orange diamonds meaning something. But if you click on a row in the reconcile window that turns it on or off, so that doesn't help very much.

  5. Is it unreasonable to want to use the checking account to record my daily expenditures as they happen rather than wait on things to clear at the bank and then go in and edit later?

  6. How does one tell MD that two transactions are the same and need to be merged? I thought I read something about merging, but I couldn't find it again.

OK, I found the merge thing. And I had a transaction where I had indicated a split (between household maint and cash). I saw original was the bank report, the categorize showed my split, so I clicked merge and clicked merge. The transaction has disappeared completely from the list. But clicking on another transaction from the same company, with a different amount (by a couple hundred dollars), I saw from the memo that it was my lost transaction, but it wasn't it was a different one, different memo.

    Hi redwoodtwig,
Downloaded txns have a blue dot in the right hand margin of the 'Description' field. Once a downloaded txn is 'Accepted' you will see a small italicized i there. (i for Internet) If you see an italicized s there, it means the txn is part of a split txn.
