Stock Quote Synchronizer extension issue

When I updated my stock quotes yesterday some of the symbols were not updated. I re-ran the update and a few more were updated. It took three runs of the sync extension to update all of the symbols. I probably have a few hundred securities in my portfolio (including current and no longer held securities) but only about 30 actually have a ticker symbol in them. I removed the other ticker symbols after reading another posting in this forum suggesting that the quote sync would occur quicker if old, no longer held, securities had their ticker symbol removed.

Is there any way to know whether all symbols were updated? Is the source for the update extension public? I would be interested to see how hard it would be to provide a summary and or a success/failure indication.

Thanks for your help.

PS
For all of my securities I've adopted the practice of naming them "SYMBOL - Description" e.g. "AAPL - Apple Computer". This makes it easier to put back a ticker symbol if I buy it again. It also makes the Stock Prices list more useful (it would be great to have a separate column in the Stock Prices list with the Ticker Symbol in it and also a way to say "Don't Update" this symbol, i.e. its in-active).

You may have noticed a number of threads on this subject where changes to either Yahoo, Java or MD have rendered a previously good system useless for UK users with Funds (Mutuals in USA).

I am not able to help you with the problem but if you want to know which securities have updated you can run the extension in advanced - Test mode and after completion move your cursor over the Price and you will get a meaasge re the latest price and date.

    See screen shot:

Thanks Neville, apparently the Stock Updater that installs by default is not the one pictured in your reply. I went to the www.mennesoft.com/yahoqt site and downloaded the beta (site says it is Build 53 but it appears to be 59). Now I get a screen like the one you showed and it seems to be much improved over the past one (at least you can see what is happening).

I'm a retired programmer and a fugitive from Quicken/Intuit and recently a MacHead. I like what I see in MD and I desperately want to be free of Intuit/Windows. I'd like to learn more about extensions and plug-ins for MD so that I can try to help the cause of escaping from the mess at Quicken (especially Quicken Essentials for the Mac, what a waste!).

    Thanks again for your help.

When checking my version of Stock updater it seems to be version 71. I know I have been updating beta versions so version 59 may not be beta but latest stable version.

I was also on Quicken for 17 years and after 1 week of trials on MD I immediately changed, never regretted at all.

The is a moving target with improvements coming along all the time.

    Regards

    Doug,

The www.mennesoft.com/yahoqt site version was the beta. Please remove it and download the latest build (71) from the extension menu in Moneydance.

There is more versatility in the new build that allows you to deselect securities to update.

There are also a few issues pertaining to reading mutual fund data from the Yahoo UK site. The developers are working to clear that up.

I'm having the same problem. None of my prices have been updated in weeks. The "Yahoo" stock synchronizer isn't in the list. The Stock/Forex Quotes Auto Synchronizer extension is running. Nowhere do I find a place to install the Yahoo one which it says it needs as well.

    Debbie,

I uninstalled all of the extensions (using the Extensions->Remove menu choice) and then installed the "Quotes and Exchange Rates" extension (using Extensions->Add, "from the Internet"). I had originally installed an earlier version of MD and although I updated MD, I think that the Extensions I had loaded were from the old version. By uninstalling and then re-installing things were properly updated.

If you go to Extensions ->Get Info For -> Quotes and Exchange Rates, you'll get an "About" box for the extension. The current version is Build 71.

    I don't use the Stock/Forex Auto Synchronizer.

I found the "Test" button very useful for trying an update and seeing the results without actually updating anything. Open the Quotes and Exchange Rate dialog using Extensions->Quotes and Exchange Rates, then click the word "Advanced" in the upper right of the dialog, a "Test" button appears in the lower left, when you press it the extension gets the quotes and shows them to you without actually updating your accounts

Once I knew it worked, then I went ahead with a real update.

    I hope that helps.

FYI to future forum searchers, I was having a hard time finding this for a moment. The name in the list of extensions that I see is "Quotes & Exchange Rate Updater."

Is it possible to revert to Stock Quote Synchronizer please? I started using Quotes and Exchanges Rates instead and deeply regret it because it downloads completely unreal quotes and malfunctions on different stocks each time. Having $164 billion in BRK.B is nice but I think Warren will eventually get upset. Several screenshots attached but many more errors.

I tried turning off the forex and I tried choosing the correct exchanges instead of the defaults, but it makes no difference.

    Running 10.6.6 and MD2010r3 build 751.

I imagine Warren would get upset. However, I'm a user, not an expert.
I got around my problems by launching the extension manually, which is
necessary even though it's set to update upon opening the application.
It isn't ideal but it works.

    tinsel1939,

I've been using the "Quotes and Exchange Rates" Build 71 for 3 or 4 months now and have not experienced the issue you describe. I have it set to only update stock prices (from Yahoo) and to only update stocks I own currently.
My only enhancement request at this point would be an option to only update manually (mine is currently set to "Daily"). When I open MD during the day I would prefer not to have it update since some Mutual funds aren't re-priced until the end of the day. When I do open it later, after the close of the markets, I then have to do a manual update since it has already satisfied its "Daily" requirement (getting prices that are no longer current). I suppose it would also work if the time of day for the update could be specified (e.g. no earlier than 6 PM), that way opening it during the day wouldn't cause an immediate update.

    Hi tinsel1939,
If you want to go back to using the Yahoo Quotes Extension, I attached it to post # 2 of the following thread:

Kevin - thank you! FTR, I was doing a manual update, forex turned off and only the stocks and funds we own.
