Hangs on first transaction entered
Lately, MD has been having a significant problem. On the first transaction I enter on any particular session, the program stops running after I hit Enter for several minutes. The top bar (minimize, maximize, etc.) continues to respond. If I kill the program and restart it, the transaction will be saved, but then the next transaction in that case will repeat the behavior. If I wait for the several minutes (5-10), it will eventually enter the transaction and then the program will work as normal after that. It happens for the first transaction every time and is very annoying.

Hi,
Do you have any banks that your are connecting to automatically? If so, what banks are they? It could be that Moneydance is downloading transactions in the background, which is slowing down the interface for some reason.
Also, could you please let me know what version of java you are using?

As far as the automatic updates, as far as I know I have none. That
is, I don't remember setting any up that way. Is there a place to
check? I can't see a way to check current downloads configuration.
I'm running Java 6 Update 22.

I have seen this happen a couple of times before and in both cases it was due to there being a transaction in some register that was very far in the future or very far in the past. e.g. 01/01/1010 rather than 01/01/2010. The reason this caused the machine to stop responding is that the net worth graph is recalculated after every transaction is entered. If the total time span for all transactions in 1000years there there is a huge amount of calculation that needs to be done to produce the net worth for every data point in the graph.
Please select Tools->graphs and reports, select the "transactions" report and set the "All dates" option and the "all accounts" option. If there are any transaction with highly unusual dates correct the dates.
Sincerely

Well, that found a transaction, but it opened a new mystery. The only
unusually old transaction is on 1/1/1970. Description is "Beginning
Balance". No category, no amount, and NO ACCOUNT. All the other
transactions range from 2005-2010.

If you imported your account data from another program such as MS Money or an old version of Quicken the opening balance transaction was likely included in the QIF file. I suspect that the account is in fact an account with no name rather than no account. You can verify this by selecting Tools->Edit categories. Look at the top of the list and see if there is a category with no name. Since the amount is $0 it is fine to delete the transaction.

Curiouser and curiouser...
I did do an initial import from Quicken, but I can't find the
transaction anywhere outside of the Transaction report. There is a
category with no name on the Edit categories screen. However, it
doesn't have that transaction. There are multiple transactions in the
Transaction report with no account, but I can't locate them anywhere
else. When I go to Tools->Edit Accounts, I see no blank account in
that list. Additionally, I used Edit->Advanced Search to try to
locate the transaction. I checked only the date box and searched for
transactions between 12/19/1910 and 12/19/1999 and it found no
transactions.

Could you show me a screen shot of the transaction report. Press the print screen key on your keyboard to take a screenshot.

Here you go!

Mike,
Interesting, it looks like this is the initial opening balance of the account. What it looks like is that one of your accounts has the "Start Date" listed as 1970. The only way I can only think of to find this listing is to open the Edit Accounts interface. To do this, go to the Tools->Edit Accounts menu item, highlight an account name, click Edit and see what the Start Date is. Repeat for each account, and when you find the appropriate one change the Start Date to something more reasonable. You could also try running the transaction report for each of your accounts separately to run down the problem account without going through the edit accounts interface for each account.
Let me know how that goes, and if you run down the problem account. If not, we'll look into other possible causes. Thanks for your patience as we run down this odd issue. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Actually, all the start dates are recent, including many of them set to
today??
The really strange part is that the hanging problem seems to have eliminated
itself. I'll monitor and let you know if it returns.

Well, I spoke too soon. The problem has returned. As I type, the program is sitting there waiting to enter the first transaction I plugged in. It's been sitting for a couple minutes now, and based on past behavior, it will probably sit another 7 or 8 minutes, at least.
I will send whatever traces, etc, you need to resolve this, because it's becoming really frustrating!

Can you turn off the net worth graph at the top of the main window and see if that resolves the issue for now. To do this select View->Hide Status Graph.

Did that and used it a few times since. It does appear that turning off the
status graph helps.

Since turning off the status graph helps I think this must be a case of a transaction with an erroneous date. If you would be willing to privately email me your data file:

I'll take a look through the file and see if i can track down the problem.

It's been almost a year and I'm still having the same problem. After multiple emails to and from Ben, he's stopped answering. I just updated to the latest version and am still having the same problem. In fact, I'm typing this while waiting for MoneyDance to acknowledge the transaction I entered five minutes ago.
Any chance of this being solved?

Did you ever send your file to Ben as he requested?
Also, are you using any anti-virus software? If so, could you try turning it off temporarily and running Moneydance? We've had reports of anti-virus software slowing down the program if they have certain settings turned out, so I'd just like to eliminate that possibility.

Yes, I sent the file and other files. We actually were corresponding until April, then nothing.
I will try turning off Norton tonight to see if that helps and will let you know.

Hi Geojunkie,
There has been some success resolving MD freezing by disabling the ker-ching sound effect.
Look to File > Preferences > General tab
Un-check 'Beep when Transactions Change'

@kmnugent - that appears to do the trick! It appears there is a bug that causes it to hang when loading the kerching sound the first time. Thanks!

Hi Geojunkie,
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear it worked.
