Find and Replace
I have the 'Find and Replace' extension installed in 'Moneydance (2015.6 build 1299), and have now a need to use it. I have inherited an MD file that has far too many sub-categories. Find and Replace promises that it can 'consolidate categories,' and I have tried my hand in doing so. I get as far as having the category name changed, all is bold, hit record, and the name becomes plain text again. However, when I look at my data, nothing has changed. Still the same abundance of sub-categories being used.
I must say, that the 'Find and Replace' window is daunting, so many check boxes, so many radio buttons. The built-in user guide is useless. Does 'Find and Replace' use the variable 'Category' and 'Tag' interchangeably? Is there a better user guide available, perhaps even a demo video?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi KBlume,
An alternative for combining categories is to use the Batch Change function in Moneydance. You can select all the transactions in a category, then right click and go to Batch Change -> Category, then select the new category and change them that way. You can make this process easier by sorting by category in the register of an account by clicking the Category column header, then click the first transaction of the category, hold the shift key, then select the last transaction of the category and all the transactions in between will be selected and you can batch change them all at once.
I hope that helps! Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

Sorry for my delayed response. I was occupied with year end reporting. Now I can turn my attention back to simplifying ‘categories.’
The batch change works well, but there is still a problem.
If I have a parent category and three subcategories as follows:
Category A
Subcategory b
Subcategory c
Subcategory d
And I now create a new
Category Z
And change all the subcategories to Category Z
When I check, Category Z now has a negative balance, and all the subcategories are still there with their ‘old’ amount.
Changing the subcategories name does not appear to move that amount into the newly created category. Why does the newly created parent category carry a negative balance when all the previously existing parent categories do not?

Hi Klaus
Can you tell me if you were in the bank account when you used BatchChange->Category or were you in the category its self?
