Credit Card
This discussion is public.
I have imported my credit card transactions into MD. However, in MD each transaction is recorded as income instead of expenditure. Therefore, as I import spending into my Credit Card my net worth is going up instead of down. Only wish that was real!
Note: I export a PFM (.QIF) file from my bank but do have the option to export as a CSV file.

Hi David,
The QIF file from your bank may be 'wired' backwards if you know what I mean. Looking at the actual internal make-up of the QIF could verify this. There wouldn't be much that could be done to resolve that issue other than to manually change each txn from within the QIF.
I suppose that you could notify your bank and cross your fingers as to whether or not they see fit to fix it.
On the other hand, you should be able to manipulate the designation given to Credit / Debit entries in a CSV file.
There are two available Moneydance extensions that can import CSV files. The Text File Importer and the CSV Importer.
If you need help setting them up or if you're having trouble importing the CSV, post back and I'll try to give you a hand.

Can I get a screen shot of your credit card register. Also can you highlight a transaction, right click and select show transaction details. Please attach a screen shot of this window. And which financial institution issued your card?

Kevin, Tom,
Yes the Credit Card account from Halifax Bank of Scotland is "wired" backwards. Because it's a Credit account and not a Debit account transactions are added to the balance owing. I used to use MSMoney and it handled this OK for Credit Cards. In the meantime instead of going into every individual transaction and changing them manually I have exported the statements again, this time in CSV format using the text file importer extension.
Once I downloaded this CSV file, I added a blank column before the actual transaction (txn) column, then inserted and copied a formula in the cells of the empty column "=0-cell reference for the actual txn" which has the effect of reversing the "polarity" of each transaction and then used this column to import into MD.
Hopefully, in the future MD will give the option to choose how financial institutions record their credit card accounts before downloading.
Thanks for responding guys.

Hi David,
I'm glad to hear that you were able to import your data albeit with a little help from a spreadsheet.
The CSV Importer extension is more robust than the Text File Importer. It offers 'Payment' and 'Deposit' options which essentially change the signage of the column.
If you'll be downloading from Halifax on a regular basis, it may be worth your while to give the CSV Importer a try.
Besides providing for custom designed file readers, it also incorporates Moneydance's 'blue dot' confirmation process which can prove helpful going forward if you are assigning Categories to your Credit Card charges.
Again, if you need help setting it up, post back and I'll try to give you a hand with it.

Hi Kevin
I can't find the CSV Importer instead of the text file importer?

Hi David,
If you're using MD 2015, you may need to d/l the CSV Importer directly from the developer's website.
You can do so here:
https://github.com/stant/mdcsvimporter2015/releases
Download the mdcsvimporter.mxt file to your computer.
From the Moneydance menu bar, go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
In the resulting window, click the 'Add From File' button.
A file browser will open allowing you to navigate to the .mxt file.
You will likely receive an ominous message when you go to install the CSV Importer. You can safely ignore it. It simply means that the developers of Moneydance have not yet digitally signed off on the code.

Hi Kevin
I've downloaded the File Importer but either the QIF or CSV files come up with errors eg "format not recognised".
I will have another look tomorrow
thanks David

Hi David,
If you can post a small sample of your CSV file, I'll try to help set up the reader for you.
I basically need to see at least one debit txn and one credit txn to see how they're formatted. Include the header row (if any) and footer row (if any)
Please keep in mind that these are public forums so make sure that there is no sensitive information in the CSV file before posting it.

Kevin, sample extract from a CSV download attached.
I've also attached a screenshot of how the CSV Importer looks - all the boxes are empty and there is nothing coming up to select.
Regards, David

Hi David,
Now that the CSV Importer is installed, open it up to it's main screen and click the 'Maintain Custom File Readers' button.
Set up the reader per the attached screen shot.
Enter 'Halifax' into the Reader Name field and click 'Add'.
Fill in each field per the screenshot. Pay careful attention to the Date format, and the header and footer row values. (pay no attention to the Home Depot and Belks Credit Card entries)
Select the column entries for each field.
You will only need to create the custom reader once.
When you're done click 'Save' and 'Done'.
Back at the main screen. Select the options per the attached screen shot. Use the [...] button to navigate to your CSV file.
Make sure everything is correctly selected.
Click 'Preview Import' (see screenshot) Close the Preview window.
Click 'Process'. A small confirmation window will open. Click OK.
That should do it.

Hi Kevin
I'm not getting screenshot 1.
When I click;
Extensions then
File Import...
I'm going straight to Screenshot 2 (as my attachment above) and all the fields are empty.

Hi David,
Near the bottom of the main screen of the CSV Importer is the button 'Maintain Custom File Readers'.
Click on that to access the reader setup window.

Hi David,
Excellent. You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that you have it working.
One word of caution. The CSV Importer is designed to eliminate duplicate txns. If a particular statement has two txns from the same vendor for the same amount, it is possible that the CSV Importer will consider one of them a duplicate and 'skip' it. Just something to keep an eye out for.
