Gategory totals do not add up correctly
Hi,
I have a category tracking heating expenses and a sub category that tracks the service plan for the boiler. It seems that the totals are correct if you go into Edit Categories, but are wrong on the left side bar. Could you please have a look?
Also, is there a way to control the side bar to show you only current year instead of the total for all transactions? It seems that now the category gets offset with the account it gets paid down (say checking) so the category (Oil Heat) balance never goes down as you pay your bills. If it did, I would not be asking how to control the side bar to show this year's balances.
Thanks,

Hi
I am afraid there is currently no way to limit the balance on the sidebar to this year. There is an existing suggestion ticket for this. I have attached the ticket to this discussion such that your post counts as a vote for the ticket.
With regard to the to the discrepancy between the sidebar balance and the category balance shown in Tools->Edit Categories... I have not been able to reproduce the problem. Can you confirm he build number you are running by selecting Help->Console Window.
Sincerely

Hi Constantine,
Look at File > Preferences > General tab. Check to see what the 'Side Bar Balance Type' is set to.
I was able to recreate your difference in the side bar amounts when the 'Side Bar Balance Type' was set to 'Cleared Balance'
Look to see If there are txns in the register of the Oil Heat Category that are not marked as 'Cleared'. Look also at the register for the 'Service' Sub-Category.
To access the registers to these two Categories, double click on them in the 'Edit Categories' window. (Tools > Edit Categories...).
A new instance of Moneydance will open to the Category register. Check to see that all txns are marked 'Cleared' that should be.

Your suggestion did work. Thanks.
It would be good to have a way to get balances by a date on the side bar as
running totals for all dates of data make no sense whatsoever.

Hi Constantine,
As Ben stated, there is currently no way to display Category amounts based on date ranges in the side bar. However, there is a table with amounts paid to Categories based on a certain date range, that can be displayed at the top of the Moneydance window.
If you create a budget with the Categories that you're interested in tracking, you could then display the budget bars along the top of the Moneydance window. (View > Show Budget Status)
If you click on the actual budget bars, a table pops out with the budgeted and actual amounts for those Categoriies based on one of four pre-determined date ranges.
