Cannot assign additional shortcut keys in OS X?

I'm running MoneyDance under OSX, and I tried setting up a shortcut key for File->Open... using the System Preferences in OS X. The shortcut key shows up in the Menu listing, like this:

File
Open ... %O

But pressing CMD-O doesn't work. Does this have something to do with it being a Java app?

Here are some details;

Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
Java Version: 1.6.0_22
Java Vendor: Apple Inc.
Mac OS X 10.6.6 (10J567)

    Doug,

    It works but only if you're already looking at the list (making it pretty much useless). So we are going to assign Command-O to that menu item for the next release of Moneydance.

    Thanks for pointing this out to us,

    Best,
