Morgan Stanley
You have Morgan Stanley Clientserv as a download option, but I can not create a connection. Please let me know if you have created a link or are they a "Quicken" only shop?

Hi,
Indeed Morgan Stanley Clientserv does allow for Direct Connect from Moneydance. The Direct Connect protocol is a standard and if it works for Quicken it will work for Moneydance. However it is necessary with many financial institutions for the customer to contact them and have the service enabled for their account. It is also often the case that the username and password issued by the bank for Direct Connect is different from the one used for website login. The following phrase usually stimulates the bank support staff into the appropriate course of actions. "I am using Quicken and would like you to enable Direct Connect on my account so that I can download my transactions. Please send me my username and password for this service." It is often necessary to lie by stating that you are using Quicken as the support staff at the bank may not have heard of Moneydance and might incorrectly believe that they do not support it.
If I can be of any further help please let me know.
Sincerely Ben Spencer

Sorry that it has taken so long to get back to you. I have been
authorized to download transactions to my Morgan Stanley account (I
enable the settings in my online access - I have verified that the
service has been enabled for all of my accounts). In trying to setup
my account inside Moneydance, I am using the regular setup. It has
populated my account number field, but it is asking for the broker
ID. I tried putting in the number that the help desk says identifies
the financial service agent (broker). I click next and the system
tells me that it has most of the information necessary to complete
the setup, but when I go to "Online", nothing is available for me to
use to attempt to download any transactions. When I go back to the
setup, the Broker Number field is blank.
I then tried to setup a new connection. When I choose Morgan Stanley
Client Serv, I get the following message:
Error: java.net.UnknownHostException: ofxwebsrv.dwdean.com
Since the first two ways did not work I tried the "manual setup", but
I don't have the ofxlog.txt file to try to give me any assistance in
populating the necessary information in the fields. I am beginning
to get more transactions than I want to manually input and this is
getting very frustrating. I am enjoying all other aspects of your
program other than this pain in the backside. Any suggestions. Thanks.
Paul

Thanks. Just tried the manual connection as well as the "assisted"
and got the following message:
There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The
details of this error are below.
The error code reported by the server was: 2000
General Error
Any thoughts as to what that means?
Thanks.

Greetings.
Thanks for your assistance with my Morgan Stanley issue. It works
like a charm. My problem now is with Chase. I am a Washington Mutual
customer who now is a Chase customer as a result of the purchase. I
was excited once all went though because I saw that you supported
Chase (but did not support WAMU). But when I try to setup online with
Chase, I get the following error:
Error code reported by the server was: 2000
The user can not sign on because of invalid user ID or (then the
error message gets cut off).
I know that the username is correct, because I just logged on to
download the statement so that I could reconcile the account after I
downloaded my transactions. Any thoughts or could you provide the
manual setup like you did for Morgan Stanley. That seemed to work
fine. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Paul

You need to talk to a Chase Rep to activate Direct Connect for Quicken as MD and Quicken use the same protocols. Direct Connect from Chase costs $9.99 per month.
I use Chase and MD Direct Connect. I have to pay for the Direct Connect service from Chase.

Thanks. I was finally able to find a place to manually download
the .qfx file so that could be imported on Chase website - originally
told only accessible through software. You might let others know that
for mac's, Chase recomends Firefox. They say Safari has issues (I
could not download the .qfx file - kept goving an error - but was
successful with Firefox) That is a crock to charge for downloads (I
pay bills from Chase's web site - just use MD to down load and
organize). Thanks for the quick response.

BTW: My settings for Morgan Stanley did not seem to hold. Tried to
download July activity today and was greeted with an error message. I
went and manually reset the settings and met with success. Will keep
an eye on that. One minor gripe, MD does not allow for swaps. I had
shares of one mutual fund and exchanged for another. The system did
not treat it properly and had to manually adjust. Keep up the good
work. Can't wait to see MD 2010.
