iPhone Sync Issues
Greetings! I upgraded to MD 2011 - rc2 (787) and also Network Sync v11 last night. I synced my iPhone without issue (mind you if starting the iPhone app twice to get it to synce is not an issue). Today there is absolutely nothing. It does not recognize the app is running on my iPhone. I have reinstalled the Network Sync and tried to have MD forget the iPhone and start again...but it couldn't find the iPhone with MD running on it. Please help. I just came back to MD after trying a competitor, and have never had issues...until now. Please help.
Cheers!
Gary

Hi all,
I use Dropbox as well, and love the tool, but what's also true is depending on a third-party application for the sync of our app could be problematic in the future. There are other reasons why we believe using our own servers are a more stable solution, but some of that stuff is a bit over my technical head.
Jim, One of the reasons we're moving to a cloud sync method is that it will be make it possible to sync remotely, such as if one is on a business trip and only wants to take along an iPad. We see is as no only a more reliable sync method, but also a significant increase in functionality.
I don't currently have a release timeline, and want to avoid promising a firm date at this point, but as soon as we have I'm I'll certainly let you all know.

Interesting that, rather than fix this, they're moving to a clout-based sync, and having difficulties with that too, it would seem...

Hi Angie,
You said "One of the reasons we're moving to a cloud sync method is that it will be make it possible to sync remotely, such as if one is on a business trip and only wants to take along an iPad. We see is as no only a more reliable sync method, but also a significant increase in functionality."
The thing is, I do that today with 1Password using Dropbox. My 1Password DB is stored on Dropbox and accessed from two Macs, an iPhone, and an iPad. It's not clear how this differs from what you described as a 'cloud sync method'.
Can you elaborate on how your new method is different than what we do now with Dropbox?
Thanks,
Jim

Ditto with Jim W and 1Password and Dropbox. I really don’t want to have to deal with another syncing service when a perfectly good one exists already that several hundred thousand people already use. (I’m extrapolating JUST from the Mac downloads via MacUpdate.com of 186,000).
Hope you reconsider the use of Dropbox.......

Jim & Kit, Yes, I love Dropbox as well, and it does seem the new, internal server route we're going down is the one we'll continue on. I'll ask our developer if he can chime in on the technical bits, I don't feel like I have a good enough grasp on those to give a full explanation.

Hi Everyone,
We absolutely appreciate dropbox syncing, and I also use 1password with dropbox syncing every day. We have also built a synchronization engine and server for our other iOS app, SyncSpace (http://infinitekind.com) which provides a couple of advantages over dropbox:
1) It is not controlled by a third party. We consider dropbox reliable and secure enough (as long as we have our own encryption layered on top), but it would be preferable to not rely on another company to perform synchronization. 2) Using our own sync server would not require customers to setup a new dropbox account, which may be confusing for some as it adds one more step to the setup process. With dropbox, the debugging and support process would become a bit more cumbersome as we can only really debug what we control.
We're entirely open to suggestions for or against dropbox and our own syncing mechanism. It might even be that we (eventually) make both options available, especially considering that we already have the code for both mechanisms partially working.
Thanks,
Sean

Angie,
Thanks for getting Sean to contribute to the discussion.
Sean,
I appreciate your technical explanation, and I agree - it may make better business sense for you to use your existing sync product rather than dropbox.
That said, it's reassuring to hear that you see no technical reason that dropbox would not work for this purpose. I think the recent comments in this thread were because we were being given various "limitations" of dropbox, which didn't make sense, given the great experience that many of us have had with dropbox.
In any case, I can't wait (literally) for your new sync solution, because at present I simply cannot use the iPhone app. As well, I like your thought that both sync solutions could eventually be supported. I won't hold you to that - but if infinitkind's priorities allow it, that would be great.
Thanks very much,
Jim

After removing and re-installing the app on 2 different occasions on my iPod it seems to be working now. It has synced that on the last 3 attempts. Wow! Hopefully this will continue…..well, at least until the next upgrade. Now, I hope to be able to use the productivity that initially grabbed my attention.

Can you please help a non-technical user make sense of these iPhone sync problem threads? I am a devoted MoneyDance user, but am frustrated by the intermittent success achieved with the sync mechanism. It will work flawlessly for several days; then, without any obvious trigger, it will stop working until I'm ready to pull out my few remaining hairs, and then start working again. I have followed the advice on all the related threads (remove apostrophe from phone name in iTunes etc.); however, the only thing that seems to help consistently is uninstalling and reinstalling the sync extension, even though the version number has not changed.
Are you formally recommending the alternative approach mentioned in this thread? If so, please provide details. Thanks.

I'm still at a loss about why DropBox isn't being utilized. If it's good enough to sync my two laptops, why isn't it suitable t sync those laptops and my iPhone?

I strongly agree!!
And the support folks seem to have gone quiet again...

After having no problems for months synching my iPhone and IPad, today when I opened MoneyDance, it strangely didn't ask me if I wanted to accept incoming connections, and then it wouldn't recognize the devices I had running Moneydance. "No devices running Moneydance were found." WHY all of a sudden?
Please work to make this reliable. If I enter individually my transactions on my computer and two devices for the time being, they'll all be listed twice when the syncing works again.
I have the latest everything installed. My Firewall has never been a problem. I'm not going to start turning it off every time I want to sync.
Please help...

Any update on this. I for one would like the simplicity of using a dropbox sync. I know it works (1Password) and it is already set up on all my machines. Seems like this is a long time in coming.

Hi Everyone,
We will be doing a limit-release beta-testing of the new app in a few weeks and are planning to have it released by the end of the fall.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi all,
On June 7 we submitted the iOS app to Apple to approval, so we'll definitely post on our blog, Twitter, and Facebook as soon as it's available. This update includes significant improvements to syncing, including Dropbox based syncing. We're not sure how long the approval queue is (Apple is a bit opaque about it) but we're hoping soon! We'll also post on this thread when the app is available.

Some bad news: Apple did not approve our latest update to the iPhone/iPad/iPod Moneydance app. This was due to the Dropbox authorization page linking to an external signup form.
The good news: we've re-submitted the app using a newer version of the Dropbox SDK that resolves the issue while also making the Dropbox authorization a bit easier. This submission also fixes a few small bugs that were discovered in the past week.
We're all very sorry for the additional delay in getting the app update. I expect it will be another 5 working days which is Apple's current advertised time to review app updates.
