Startup crash (extension problem?)

This morning, Moneydance started (invariably) crashing on startup. I think the crash is normally after I've finished typing the password for my encrypted file, but sometimes (if I type it slowly) the crash happens sooner.

It's somewhere in the Java VM. I've discovered that if I boot from a different disk, I can open the file.

The only obvious things I can think of are (1) installing a new Java virtual machine recently and (2) installing the Update extension and telling it to check for new versions on startup. The different boot disk has neither the new Java VM nor the Update extension (or any extensions, for that matter) on it.

Since I can't start up Moneydance, I can't try removing the extension to see if that fixes the problem. Is there a place that the extension is stored on disk that I can access to try removing it? Or something I can modify, without starting Moneydance, to keep the Updates extension from checking for new versions on startup?

    Hi Lofty,

The extensions reside in the .moneydance\fmodules folder (note the ( . ) in front of the moneydance folder name.)
The Moneydance Updater file name is updater.mxt

Can you tell me the java version you are running. Run Moneydance and select Help->Console Window to see the java version.

Here's what the console window shows:

    Starting Moneydance 2011 (790)
    Settings Folder: /Users/lofty/.moneydance
    OS: Mac OS X 10.7 x86_64
    Java: 1.6.0_25 (Apple Inc.)
Error loading extension: java.util.zip.ZipException: error in opening zip file

    Hi Lofty

Can you try removing the extension and then installing it again, it sounds like the download didn't complete properly.

    Ben,

I'll try. But I'm about to go away for a week, and it may have to wait until I get home.

    Ben,

Sorry for the long, long delay - but I did reinstall the extension, and it's been working fine since then. So likely you're right, something was wrong with the first download.
