I'm trying this again. Please don't close the discussion on my problem. The "solutions" didn't work.

"When I transferred my Quicken 2010 qif data, the MD parent file name changed to QIF, the name of the file I used to transfer the Q2010 data. Now, I can't find a way to rename the parent file back to its original name. I'm using a windows 7 machine. Can you help?"

First, I can find the location in my C:users file. I see "personal finance.moneydance." I can click on it and it shows two sub-files. I can close MD. I can reopen MD. But the parent file name is not changed. Please help me.

Thank you. And please don't summarily close this discussion until a working solution is found. Bob

    Hi Bob,

Apologies, you can re-open the discussions at any time.

Can you confirm for me the file you have tried to rename? You should edit the 'personal finance.moneydance' dataset, but be sure to retain the .moneydance extension.

If you've already tried this, can you let me know the issues you encountered?

Thank you for a prompt reply. Your previous reply to my request said the discussion was closed. I didn't see a way to reopen the discussion.

What do you mean when you say "edit the 'personal finance.moneydance" dataset? When I click on the "personal finance.moneydance entry, it become highlighted. Then what? There is no save feature. Do I just close MD and reopen? When I did this previously, the parent file name did not change. I don't know what to do. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Bob,

You can rename the data set, in the same way you'd rename any other file.

I believe you're using Windows 7, so you should be able to right-click the 'personal finance.moneydance' file with the mouse and select the “Rename” command in the drop-down menu.

You should see an edit box in place of the file’s name. You can edit the name of the file using this edit box.

If you want to apply changes, press Enter or click with the mouse somewhere outside the box. If you want to exit editing and abandon all changes, press the Esc button.

Please let me know if you continue to encounter difficulties.

Ok, the simpler instructions worked! Sort of. I was able to rename the parent file in windows. I closed MD. I reopened MD. I got my first Welcome Screen! It showed 2 parent files, one with the newly renamed parent and the other with a Personal Finance name. I clicked on the newly renamed parent and confirmed the parent file was indeed renamed. I closed MD. Then reopended it. No welcome screen, it boots straight to newly renamed parent file. Is this ok? I liked the welcome screen, but is there a second parent file? Thanks again for your help. Bob

    Hi Bob,

If you have more than one dataset, you can view them within Moneydance, select the File menu --> Open, to see a list of available data sets.

If you'd like to remove a dataset, you can follow the steps in this article, however the datasets will be seperate and wont effect each others accounts, balances etc, so you can keep them both if you wish.

OK, thanks, Jenny. I will delete one of the datasets and I now know how to rename a parent file in Windows 7. The simpler instructions helped tremendously. I'm having other MD problems but those are outside of this thread. Have a great day! Bob
