I accidentally designated some transactions into categories and I realise they should be unallocated. When I try to change categories to effectively leave it blank so the transaction has no category the default is to reinsert the old category. Is there someway to deselect all categories for a translation that has already had a category assigned to it?

I believe that a transaction always has a category. If you had ones with blank categories then you somehow got those entered with broken version. The category is the necessary other half of a double entry so it must exist.

If you want to fake it out, just create a category called "None" and put them all in that. you might also be able to create a category that is a single space, " " and that would look like none.

Thanks but I have plenty of transactions without a category, for instance when I download transactions from my bank account they don't have a category or I can alwAys create a new transaction without designating a category if I dint want to. Just seems to be problematic when trying to undo. Was hoping not have to create a shadow category but guess I will have to n

It is not possible to have a transaction without a category in Moneydance. Perhaps you have a category with a name that is empty as the default on your account that is assigned automatically to downloaded transactions but you cannot have a transaction without a category.
