My current Moneydance is there somewhere, but cannot easily get into it

I have been on Moneydance 4 for some time and have the new orange icon in the bar at the bottom. Now the icon has a black question mark over the orange money circle. If I click on the icon it does nothing. It seems to think it is going into Moneydance 3 as I now have several old square icons in the bottom bar. A reboot gets rid of these extra icons. A reboot also puts a new orange icon at the bottom. If I click on this new icon, the question mark appears.

In Finder under application I have
Moneydance 6 August 2014
Moneydance (1).zip 15 Mar 2016
Moneydance 2 16 Aug 2014
Moneydance 3 15 Mar 2016
Moneydance -3 5 April 2014
Moneydance -3 original 5 April 2014
Moneydance.zip 16 Mar 2016
Moneydance 4 appears only after I have unzipped etc

If I click on Moneydance.zip and follow that through, a new orange icon is created, and if I open that file my up to date data is there!

Can you please tell me how to have the system look at only Moneydance 4, and what files I can safely get rid of?

Thanks

    Hi Anne,

From my understanding of OSX, the question mark appears in the dock, when you move the docked application from its original folder location, and it may have been moved to another folder or renamed it, or both. This is because there is a path associated with a docked file or application and if moved this is broken.

From what you have described, it seems as though you have downloaded Moneydance 2015 from our website. Once one the 15 Mar 2016 and also 16 Mar 2016, resulting in the '.zip' files you see. The application seems to have been unpacked multiple times resulting in multiple copies of the application with numbers indicating that there was already an application of that name on your system.

At this point, I would recommend searching using Finder for 'Moneydance' and sending me a screenshot of the results? You can read instructions for taking a screenshot from here. This will help me identify what can be removed and what files we should retain to ensure your data remains untouched.

    Hi Ian

Thank you for your quick reply.

I hope this is what you are asking for.   The reason for all the extra files is because I was frantically trying to find my active Moneydance.  I downloaded Moneydance again - that is when I realised that I had not lost everything because it did not show an empty new file, it showed my up-to-date data.  Last night I discovered that I could drag the icon with the question mark to Trash, and it said ‘removed from dock’ so I thought that sounded ok, i.e. I was not actually deleting any files.  I then selected Moneydance from the Applications folder, not the icon, and amazingly it put a clean correct icon in the dock.  This new icon (4th from the left) works as it should and I can now get into my live Moneydance in the normal way.

You will see there are two old style icons on the right.  They do not allow me to drag them to Trash, I drag and they pop back.  I could try a Force Quit but don’t know if that would upset the good stuff.  I am afraid I do not understand how all the files fit together, and what needs to be there and what doesn’t!  This of course will be obvious to you!!!

    Hi Anne,

Let me to try to explain how the Moneydance application, and data sets work. This may give you a better understanding of whats happening on your system.

The screenshot you've sent it quite small, but I think i'm able to decipher what I need. The MD icon you're seeing in the Dock (fourth from the left) will be the most updated version on your system, and in your applications folder.
If you right click the newer MD icon and select 'Options --> Show in Finder' this should take you to the file in your applications folder, and you'll be able to see how this has been named, (Moneydance 2, 3, 4 etc) and ensure its not deleted from the list.
When you view the list of Moneydance applications (as shown in your screenshot), you can ensure the correct one is not removed, depending on the name.

When deleting the MD software, you want to be sure you're deleting the program and not your data. On your screenshot, you'll see under the 'kind' column, these state 'Application' - these can be removed (except the version you're using). You do not want to remove the '.moneydance' files, which are shown as 'Moneydance Account Book' in your screenshot as this is your data.

In the screenshot, it appear the older versions of Moneydance (shown in the dock on the right) are still running. This may be why you're unable to delete them. You can right click and force quit these applications, which should then allow them to be moved to trash.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if theres anything you want me to clarify before you proceed. I am happy to help if you need further assistance with this.
