single line mode
Having upgraded to Moneydance 2011 (791), I find that every time I open certain accounts they are displayed in 2 line mode. If I set them to single line mode, they will come back as 2 line mode when I restart Moneydance. Is there any way to force them to open only in single line mode, which is what I always operate in.

I believe the register setting only save when you leave the register. Try setting the register to single line mode and then return to the home page before closing the program.

After experimenting for a while, that doesn't seem to work. The accounts seem to relapse to 2 line mode at random, sometimes a few days later. Just this morning I opened an account that hadn't been visited for a few days, and - back to 2 line mode.
Really puzzled. Never happened with earlier versions.

Are all of your accounts in single line mode?
Moneydance only stores the line mode for a particular type of account not for particular account. Which is to say you can save all bank account as single line mode. But if you change one bank account back to 2 line mode and save all bank accounts will go back to 2 line mode.

Ben
Would I be right in thinking that, if you make an entry on the second line, it automatically changes to 2 line mode for that account and all accounts of that type? Given what you just said, that might explain the seemingly random changes.

Unfortunately that does not explain it. Entering information on the second line of a transaction do not put the account into 2 line mode.

Ben
I have experimented, and it appears to be entirely random. I can set all accounts of one category to single line mode, and save. Next time I open the program, they may be OK, or one or more of them may have reverted to 2 line mode. Or other items will have switched.
Really odd!

This is happening to me too, and it is maddening. Very random and never happened before last update.

This is odd. Could you both let me know what OS you're running (so we can try to run down the potential causes), as well as the version of Java (look under Help->Console Window to get this info).
Thanks for helping us to run down this sticky issue.

That was the one that was solved. I am still having trouble with the single
line problem - quite random!

I haven't yet been able to reproduce the problem of single line mode not sticking. I rather hope it is deterministic rather than random. If you are ever able to reliably reproduce the problem please do let me know the steps to do so.

I noticed the same thing happening whenever I sync my Android MD with the one in my notebook.

I'm noticing it frequently but have not been able to figure out exactly when it happens. Console window says
Starting Moneydance 2011 (792)
Settings Folder: C:\Users\Edward Reid.moneydance
OS: Windows XP 5.1 x86
Java: 1.6.0_25 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Note that the OS identification is incorrect; I'm on Windows Vista 64-bit (with updates to within a couple of days).
This is only a small additional piece of information, but it's another user with the problem on an OS that I don't think has been mentioned in the thread.

I believe the problem exists and as yet none of use here at moneydance have been able to reproduce it. If any of you can reliably reproduce the problem please enumerate the steps necessary in this discussion.
I am sorry for the trouble this is causing you all.

Ben, would there be any way to provide a debugging version which traces the circumstances under which the mode gets set? I've been watching, but so far I haven't figured out what correlates. I'm sure it only happens when changing registers -- it never happens when browsing a register or adding or editing transactions. I've been wondering if perhaps it happens when a new window is opened -- I'm still holding out for that as a possibility but I'm not very optimistic for that being the answer.
I would wonder if I were just noticing it when I opened registers that hadn't been opened for a long time and were in 2-line mode. But I gave up using two-line mode a long time ago -- when I need to see the second line, I double-click the transaction, or I use Find and Replace or a report to see multiples. But I just don't use it in registers, so I'm 99% sure that something is causing it to revert.

Ben
On my system, (Win7 Home Premium 64 bit) the following works consistently:
1. All in a category (eg credit cards) set to single line mode.
2. Open Moneydance 2011 (791), Java 1.6.0_26
3. Open one credit card register and add a single new transaction
4. Close Moneydance without going to home page, but saving in accordance with prompt
5. Reopen Moneydance - that particular credit card register will now be double line, and the others may be.
Maybe this will help?

Roger's method does not reproduce the problem for me. (MD2011 b792, Java 1.6.0_25, Windows Vista with all updates.) I almost never quit MD except to reboot, and I have the option set to auto-save on quit, so I'm sure those are not factors when I usually see it. I tried following Roger's sequence, but did not change the auto-save-on-quit option since that could not have been involved for me.
So there must be other factors involved as well.
I've gone through and made sure that all account types are set to single line mode (except investments and loans, which do not offer that option). I did have assets set to double-line (seldom look at those registers). I'll keep watching.
I would wonder if I might be confused by the fact that the setting is saved only for account types and not for individual accounts, except that I do not recall switching to two-line mode for any register in a very long time (years). Still, I'm keeping that in mind.

I have MoneyDance 2011 built 791 on OS X Lion. I have a problem that I only want to be in single-line view, but MoneyDance has a preference for two-line view that I can't change.
I find by reading the discussions that this is a very long-standing problem for which MoneyDance only had ad-hoc solutions that do not work.
This problem has existed for a long time and a lot of people have complained about it in many different builds and versions of MoneyDance. Certainly your programmers are smart enough to fix it or at the very least to come up with a definitive explanation. They've had plenty of time. The fact that they have not done this makes it appear that you aren't taking us seriously. It makes me wonder what other unfixed flaws are lurking under the hood in MoneyDance.
I am very frustrated because this whole situation makes no sense..

Ken,
One user in this thread has posted a list of steps which reproduce
the problem. That sequence does not reproduce it for me. If you can
provide a list of steps which reliably reproduces this problem, it
will help both MD and all the users.
One explanation has already been given in this thread, something I
didn't know before. That is that the single/double preference is
stored by TYPE of account, not by individual account. And any change
you make -- changing the display in one account, thinking of it as
temporary -- is saved with your accounts file -- you don't set it in
preferences. I'm sure that doesn't explain what I'm seeing, and based
on your comments it's unlikely that it explains what you are seeing,
but it's good to remember when trying to reproduce the problem. More
to the point, MD support is attempting to provide us with what
explanations they can (try getting that much from Apple or Microsoft
-- good luck!) even though they do not yet have the "definitive
explanation" which I'm sure they want as much as we do.
I understand your frustration. However, as both a MD user and someone
who has spent several decades programming, I have to say that your
comment about "your programmers ought to be able to fix it" is
unfair. Even a program at the level of MD is quite complex, and
tracking down problems based on just user descriptions, when you
cannot see the problem happening or trace it, can be tremendously
difficult. That's why developers, at MD and elsewhere, constantly ask
for test cases or ways to reproduce the problem.
It's an axiom of programming that there are always bugs in programs
which are large enough to be useful. The difficulty of writing
correct programs was a rude shock to the pioneers of computing,
people like John von Neumann and Maurice Wilkes -- and the programs
they were writing were seriously trivial compared with most useful
programs today. Programmers have learned this principle, but it still
comes as a rude shock daily. So you are absolutely correct that there
are "unfixed flaws lurking" in MD -- and in every other useful
program that you use.

Ben, I've found one situation which reproduces the problem reliably. I do this often enough that it may be the only thing which is doing it for me.
It related to opening different files.
Suppose I have file B in double-line mode. (I'll assume I'm only talking about bank accounts.)
I use "open recent file" to open file A.
I switch to single-line mode, make some changes, and save.
Then "open recent file" B. It opens in double-line mode.
"Open recent file" A. It opens in double-line mode.
In other words, if a file is in double-line mode, then it re-opens in double-line mode. But if a file is in single-line mode, that is not retained -- if the previous file opened was in double-line mode, then the file in single-line mode will change to double-line mode.
It would be very interesting to know which of the people reporting this problem work with more than one file. I've only been doing so for the past couple of years. By the end of this year I will probably be back to only one file.

I only work with a single file and it occurs repeatedly, yet seemingly random.

I have found that doing the following will always save one line mode in my registers. When done click Home and then using the menus click File Save and then File Quit.
Doing this i never lose one line mode.
Hope this helps

In case anyone thinks the previous posters are crazy, I observe the same problem. I am using Moneydance 2011 (790) with Sun Java 1.6.0_22 on Ubuntu 11.04. I also never had this problem before the last upgrade.

I believe that this problem is supposed to be fixed in 802, but I find that it is still happening.
28 Posted by Ben Spencer on 21 Oct, 2011 03:36 PM
Yes I believe this problem has finally be squished in the current stable release of MD2011r2 build 803. You can get it from here:

Not squished entirely, I'm afraid, Ben. I can still reproduce it in b803 as follows, which is very similar to what I most recently posted. I did this both using keyboard shortcuts as much as possible and using mouse and menus entirely, with identical behavior in both cases. (Of course, others posted different conditions which elicited the problem for them, so it probably is fixed for some cases.)
File A is open with a bank account selected and displaying in double-line mode. Switch to single-line mode. Save.
Open Recent file B. Select a bank account. It displays in single-line mode. Switch to double-line mode. Save.
Open Recent file A. Select a bank account. It displays in double-line mode (as expected, since single/double is an application/account-type setting, not a file/account-type setting). Switch to single-line mode. Save.
Open Recent file B. Select a bank account. It displays in single-line mode. Do not save.
Open Recent file A. Select a bank account. It displays in double-line mode. This is not as expected.
I have not tested whether the save/don't-save part is important. In all cases I selected the first bank account in the sidebar, which is the second bank account in the complete accounts list. I have not tried combinations other than what I show, or at least I haven't saved information about any other trials. I haven't found a shorter sequence to elicit the problem, but I have not tried exhaustively.
I've done this five times now with b803, and the behavior has been completely consistent. Although I don't expect to use this exact sequence very often, the fact that double-line mode can be invoked unexpectedly indicates there's still a problem, and that problem might arise in other circumstances as well.
While I'm at it, let me also mention that to change the lines mode using the keyboard shortcuts chrl-alt-1 or ctrl-alt-2, I first have to click in the register. If I just click an account name in the sidebar, those keyboard shortcuts do not work. I can file this as a separate issue if that's better -- whether I use the keyboard shortcuts or the menus does not affect the behavior related to the issue of this thread.
Edward

You are right I can still reproduce it. I have emailed the developers.
