Entering transaction takes 8 seconds to register
When I enter a transaction, or match a downloaded transaction - basically any action that adds or alters a transaction, it takes about 8 seconds between hitting enter and the ka-ching sound and the program being ready for input again. What is going on?
I'm running the latest version of MD 2011. My data file is about 60 MB, with transaction data going back to at least 2001 (when I started using MD, I imported my existing Quicken data, which I'd been using for a long time). I have several dozen accounts (many of them inactive), and probably hundreds of securities.
I'm running under Windows Vista 64bit, on a laptop with 4GB ram and a dual core AMD Turion, 2.1 GHz.

Hi
If you have the Net Worth graph displayed in the status bar please try turning it off. Do this by selecting View->Hide Status Bar. The net worth graph is recalculated after each modification to the data file and since it is plotting a large number of data points it can take a few seconds to calculate with a substantial data set.
If that doesn't help can you confirm if the delay is present in all account types or only investment accounts.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer

You were right on the money (dance), Ben. Hiding the net worth display solved the issue. And it was both types of accounts - investment and banking.
You know, this recalculation makes the program look like such a dog, performance wise, with a large data file. Combined with the cause not being obvious, it really gives a bad impression.
As a programmer, it would seem to be a simple change to have the graph only recalculate for the parts corresponding to the date of the modified transaction (and later). I do realize there may be architectural or other considerations that could make a change like that more complicated than it seems, but if not, it would be a really big win for little effort.
In any case, thanks for finding a fix for me. I do like MD so much better than Quicken and just want to try to help make it even better.

Hi Jerry
Thanks for getting back to me. I rather like the idea of some sort of incremental recalculation to the net worth graph on a register update. Sounds quite doable and interesting as well.
Thanks for the suggestion. I am sorry for the trouble this caused you.
Sincerely

I have mentioned this same issue in a different thread and turning off the net worth graph does not resolve my issue.
It is getting very painful to work in MD as the time it takes to do anything is getting worse and worse. Do you have nay other options on how to solve this issue?

Hi Micky,
To assist the Moneydance Support Staff in helping you, provide the following:
Version of Moneydance
Operating system
Version of Java installed
You should be able to glean this information from the first few lines of text diplayed in the Console Window listed under Moneydance's Help menu. Just copy and paste it into your next post.
Also, check to see if you can exclude the Moneydance program and your Moneydance data file from your Anti-virus program.

Version 790
Win 7
6 update 26
I'll take a look at the AV settings.

No change (still very slow) when excluding the file and the process in MS Security Essentials.

Hi Micky,
I'm not experienced with Win 7. Does Win 7 still use Taskmanger or does it have something similar to Process Explorer? In any case, try to see if there is some other program or process that's hogging your CPU or Memory usage.
In my particular setup, MD 2011 (788), Win XP, Java: 1.6.0_26 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Moneydance seems to use between 35 ~ 95 MB memory and can use upwards of 60% CPU when changing Accounts or different views. Other than that it uses 0% CPU when idle.

Yes, Win7 does have the task manager. MD is a very low consumption, peaking at about 25% of my AMD Phenom II 976 quad processor. it uses 120-150MB of RAM, not a big deal as I have 12GB. I do not run a swap file, so there is no lag with switching out of memory. MD itself runs off of a SSD drive. The windows install is pretty fresh, only about 3 months old.
With checking this, I also set MD to run as Admin, which should not be needed, but I did anyways. It will take about a day to determine if this helps as every restart helps the performance, right now saving a new transaction only takes about 4 seconds. The performance deteriorates pretty quickly the longer it is open.
MD is the only application that I have that runs poorly, Handbrake is really the only app the stresses my PC. I do not typically encode on handbrake at the same time as running MD.
I have transactions going back to 1995, so I do have quite a bit of data.

Hi Micky,
Yikes!
With your setup, you should be feeling a blast of wind on your face after entering a txn.
Other than uninstalling and reinstalling Java and / or uninstalling and reinstalling Moneydance, I'm fresh out of ideas.
Sorry I couldn't help.

Can you confirm if the slow performance when entering a transaction only occurs with investment transactions or is with with all types of transactions?

The lag is with all types of accounts and when reconciling.

Hi Micky,
Do you have the Network Synchronizer extension installed?
If so, look to this thread, the users there that were using the Network Synchronizer extension removed it to resolve their lag issue, albeit a different lag issue.

Nope, don't have that extension installed.

Hi Micky
How large is your data file? Would you be willing to email it to me privately such that I can run MD with you data file and do a performance analysis? My email address is ben @ moneydance.com without the spaces.

I'll need to do a little cleaning of my file first, but I am ok with sending
you my file.

Hi Micky,
Do you have the 'kerching' sound effect activated? File > Preferences > General tab > 'Beep When Transactions Change'.
There was some luck with solving an issue of Moneydance freezing by deselecting the 'kerching' sound effect. It might be related.
Look to post # 10 of the following thread:

Good news, turning off the register sound has made a big difference in speed. Running as admin helped some, but after restarting with the sound off, MD is moving at a speed I would expect. The full test will be keeping the program running for about 3 days, but it is moving at a speed I have not seen for a long while, even with a fresh restart.

HI Micky,
Glad to hear things are looking up. Thanks for posting back. Let us know what happens after a couple of days. OK?
