I just downloaded and purchased Moneydance and the application will not remember the registration number. I have been to your knowledge base and tried the fix there but when I search for the folder using your directions it comes back saying the folder does not exist. Please help. I am using 10.7 and Moneydance 2011

Solved my own problem - Moneydance did not create the .moneydance folder in the user section as needed by the application. Once I created this folder manually and went through the initial start-up process everything went smoothly. This is definitely a bug that needs to be fixed.

    Hi Stephen

We have seen this a handful of times and are not entirely sure what the problem is. As far as we can tell the only reason that would prevent the .moneydance folder from being created is if there was something incorrect on the home folders permissions.

    Hi Ben/ Stephen,
I encountered the same exact problem after downloading MD2011 last 8/3 onto my OS10.7; and despite over a dozen attempts, the app will still not remember my recently purchased reg number. There installation did not create a .moneydance folder either; how do you set up the folder manually? Everytime I try to create a ".moneydance" folder I'm not allowed to by my Mac as anything starting with a "." is reserved for system related matters.

    Cheers,
    Roman

    Hi Roman

You can't create the folder with Finder because finder has a restriction about creating folders that start with a .

You need to create the folder from a terminal. To open Terminal, navigate to your Applications folder, open Utilities, and double click on Terminal.

Open a terminal and enter exactly the following command:

    mkdir .moneydance

If you get a permission denied error message run the following command so I can see the permission on your home folder:

    la -al

Then take a screenshot (press the print screen key on your keyboard to take a screenshot) and attach it to this discussion. Make sure that the terminal window is large enough that I can see all of the output.

You can also to a get info on the user folder and then change the permission at the bottom of the get info box to full read and write privileges. Then you should be able to create the .moneydance folder like you create any other. This is what I had to do. I used tinker tool to make sure the folder was created.

    Hi Ben,
    Appreciate your assist…

I've done as you requested and got the following script:

Last login: Sat Aug 6 15:16:23 on console
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ mkdir .moneydance
    mkdir: .moneydance: Permission denied
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ la -al
    -bash: la: command not found
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ la -al
    -bash: la: command not found
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ la-al
    -bash: la-al: command not found
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ mkdir .moneydance
    mkdir: .moneydance: Permission denied
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$ la -al
    -bash: la: command not found
    IMaCs-iMac:~ roman$

So evidently, the "la -al" command isn't recognized for some reason.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers,

Ben, as detailed my a separate email to you / Stephen, I was able to enter my user profile and activate the required read/write permissions. Everything seems to be working smoothly now.
    Many thanks for the assist.

    Ben, Stephen,

You guys were spot-on: it was a permissions issue. I did exactly what Stephen recommended below (basically activating the read/write permissions for my profiles) and now everything is working as it should.
    Many thanks for the support!

I put together a quick FAQ article on the subject. Since you both actually had the problem and solved it would you mind giving me your input on the article. Would these instructions have been sufficient for your to resolve the isue? If not what should I add/change?

    Ben,
You're spot on with your FAQ article.

p.s. I sent another query in earlier today as I'm having a VERY difficult time synching my iPhone and iPad to my MD desktop (despite checking out the FAQs + knowledge base).
