Recovery

Greetings,

I have used Moneydance for the past two years. I backup regularly as an encrypted file on a remote drive. Two weeks ago, my Macbook Pro hard drive crashed and died. I reinstalled MoneyDance on the new drive but the program doesn't access my backup. It also does not ask for the encryption password so I assume there are some steps necessary for the program to be receptive to the file. Can someone here share the protocol for recovering an encrypted file? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hello,

What version of Moneydance are you using? What is the full name of the backup file that you are trying to open, and how are you trying to open it?

    Hello Ethan,

    I downloaded the new version 2015.7 (1358) but I don't know what version I
had before loosing my hard drive (I purchased Moneydance two years ago).
The backup file name is Finances.moneydancearchive and I am trying to
access it via Restore from Backup. I get this message "Error reading file:
    java.lang.NullPointerException".

    Hi,

Can you try upgrading to the latest preview version of Moneydance to see if this resolves the issue? You can download this version from here. You can check the version you're currently running within Moneydance by navigating to Moneydance --> About Moneydance. The latest preview version is 2015.8 build 1369.

I've checked our records, and it appears you previously purchased MD2014. This means you're entitled to a free upgrade to MD2015, and can use the same license key to register the software you've downloaded.

If you're still encountering issues after upgrading, can you send me your errlog.txt file? If you're using Mac OS X, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

    or:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and and copy and paste in the following:

    ~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

Hi Jenny, thanks for the help,

I still am not able to recover the backup. I get the same error message.
The attachment is the errorlog file you requested. Thanks again for
helping.... I really need Moneydance to work as I depend on it.

    Hi Ron,

Can you let me know where the .moneydancearchive file is located? Could you try creating a folder in the location called something like 'archive'. Then move the '.moneydancearchive' file into the folder.
Then, within Moneydance, use the 'Restore from Backup' option, to select the file in its new location, and let me know if you have any success.

    Hi Jenny,

The backup is on a dedicated external hard drive. There are actually two
    entries there:

    1. *Finances.moneydance* which is expandable into two folders, one is
named "attach" and the other "checkpoint". The first (attach) contains
several folders, and the second (checkpoint) contains numerous files.

    2. *Finances.moneydancearchive* which does not contain folders or files.

I wanted to tell you this before I create a folder as you suggested as
perhaps it will change your advice. Also, I say again that when I try to
restore from backup MoneyDance doesn't ask for a password for this
    encrypted file.

    Hi Ron,

Apologies for the delay in responding to you. We've had a high number of support queries of late and I'm afraid we somehow missed your replies.

From the information you have provided, you have both a Moneydance data set and a Moneydance backup file on your system.

To open the Moneydance data set - First move your 'Finances.moneydance' file/folder to a location of your choosing on your system. Open Moneydance, and then navigate to File --> Open other. Then navigate to and open your 'Finances.moneydance' file/folder. Hopefully this will open without issue.

To open the Moneydance backup file - First, creating an empty folder on your system called something like 'archive'. Then move the '.moneydancearchive' file into the folder. Open Moneydance, navigate to File --> Restore from Backup. Then navigate to and restore your 'Finances.moneydancearchive' file in the new location.

Hopefully one of these methods allows you to open your data correctly. However, if you are still running into issues please let us know and we can investigate further.

    Hola Ian,

I did as you instructed and had partial success. I was required to enter
the password and the data opened properly in Moneydance. However, I still
have difficulties opening the archive backup. below is the message I am
    receiving.... Please advise.

    Hi Ron,

Have you tried creating a new empty folder, and then moving the '.moneydancearchive' file into this folder? Sometimes archive files can run un to difficulty if trying to restore a data set, if another data set with the same name exist in the same location. Within Moneydance, use the 'Restore from Backup' option, to select the file in its new location.

If this doesn't work, please let me know and we can investigate further.

Yes, Ian. I created a folder just for the archive file. Also, since the
error mentions Java, I installed the latest Java version on my Mac. Still,
I am not able to access the archive file.
