Google Finance History Updates ETFs, But Not Mutual Funds
This discussion is public.
Given all of the problems with the quotes from Yahoo Finance, I've tried switching to history-only updates from Google Finance. However, it errors out on any mutual fund ticker symbol. I can see this in the test mode (click on Advanced, then use the Test button). When I click the red x to see what happened, I get the following message:
Received response code 404 and message 'Not Found'.
But it works just fine for the few ETFs that I'm tracking.
Here are some mutual fund tickers that fail:
vipsx fbidx vwiux vbmfx vbtlx vtiax vtsax
And here are some ETF tickers that work:
veu vv
These are all valid ticker symbols, and I can use them to manually pull up quotes on Google Finance. But only the ETF tickers work when updating in Moneydance.
Can anyone else confirm this problem?
Looks like yet another workaround of the quote updating problems has been foiled. This sucks.

Hi exigent,
Moneydance 2011 (792)
OS: Windows XP 5.1 x86
Java: 1.6.0_26 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Q&ER updater v.73
I can confirm that mutual fund 'Historical Security Prices' from Google fail with the 404 error . I can't speak to ETF's, I don't hold any. Two closed end mutual funds that I hold did successfully update.
Oy vay!

Thanks, Kevin. Glad to know I'm not alone.
So... What now? I welcome any suggestions, but would also really like to hear an official response. Hopefully it's just a bug in the extension than can be solved with a quick update.

Hi exigent,
I saw on another thread that you posted on where a user had updated from MD 2008 to MD 2011 he was wondering if the quotes problem happened after the upgrade.
http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/md2010-beta/227-stock-pric...
I think I'll try loading MD 2008 onto a spare machine and see what happens. I'll try it with the Q&ER updater and the old Yahoo Quotes extention and see what happens.
Give me a couple of hours and I'll post back my findings.
Could be a colossal waste of time or could help to narrow down the problem some.

Hi Kevin and Exigent,
I believe this is unrelated to the problems that are happening with yahoo and the extension.
For whatever reason google only makes certain price histories available as a CSV file that can be downloaded, even though it will list those securities on its website.
This is an example address for which Moneydance would query google for the price history of VEU for October 1st 2008 to October 9th 2008: http://www.google.co.uk/finance/historical?q=NYSE:VEU&startdate...
As you can see it works but if we try one of the mutual funds that you listed that doesn't work like VIPSX then google's server won't return anything:
http://www.google.co.uk/finance/historical?q=MUTF:VIPSX&startda...
My understanding is that it has always been the case that google does not give downloadable price histories for certain sets of securities.
I mentioned this in another thread but if you follow the instructions on how to set up queries to yahoo finance's servers you can confirm for yourselves that they are passing bad data: http://www.gummy-stuff.org/Yahoo-data.htm
That being said, we do believe that we have a theoretical work around and I apologize again that we have not yet implemented it and thank you all for your patience.
Sincerely,

Hi Jon,
Thank you for your reply and explaination of how certain quotes are retreived and others not.
Just to clarify, am I correct in that the Q&ER updater queries the .csv files offered by Yahoo / Google then parses and imports them?
Would it be possible with a future version of the Q&ER Updater to allow the user to load their own formated .csv file?
This would be similar to the 'Import from file' option available now however through the use of the Q&ER updater, there would be now be the new ability to import quotes for multiple ticker symbols all at once.
Thanks for your consideration to this matter.

Hi exigent,
I ran the Q&ER updater (Current Prices) on MD2011 and the Yahoo Quotes extension on MD2008, both data files updated accurately this evening.
Here's hoping that this is fixed.

Kevin can you confirm if you are getting incorrect prices when downloading Quotes from yahoo or are you seeing error messages as the extension skips incorrect prices?

Hi Ben,
As things would have it, tonight with the Q&ER updater set to 'Current Security Prices' (Yahoo Finance - USA) all quotes came thirough accurately.
Prior to tonight, when the Q&ER updater would import the wrong prices it would be due to the updater receiving (or Yahoo giving) a quote for the wrong date. Rather than receiving quotes for that particular night, I would only receive some quotes for that night and the some quotes from 1 day ago, some from 2 days ago or sometime even more.
The updater was only skipping quotes for securities that I no longer hold. Which I beleive is the expected behavior.
The date accuracy problem was random. I could run the Q&ER updater 10 times and get 10 different totals.
But then again, tonight everything came through accurately. I don't envy you trying to figure this one out.

Kevin: Is this with v73, or with a newer (perhaps beta) version of the updater? I can give it a try.

Hi exigent,
I'm using v.73. Did your quote prices come through accurately tonight?

It's kind of surprising that Google would shut out Vanguard and Fidelity mutual funds like that since that's such a significant portion of the investing world. I wonder if it's all mutual funds across the board... I don't have any others and am not inclined to check, but that's a huge shortcoming. I suppose they want you to track your data inside Google Finance rather than just pulling quotes from there.
